the silver one is a 550 REED motor those large intake ducts are for the reed cages to chill in. the other one is a JS 440 or 550. If you need a cylinder or any boring questions call Gordon at Pacific Motor Sports 714 671 1145. We have a few Reed cylinders, Plenty or 550 Sleves which we are able to install if you ship your cylinder over.
were located in Brea CA,
Call weekdays 9am-6pm
let em know Mark referred you from this website.
Well get you taken care of.

thanks mark

thanks mark ill call gordon and get him to ship a cylinder over.

The stud pattern is different. You would need the upper crankcase half from a reed motor plus reed pistons, reed intake, and a head for the read stud spacing.

Jay

I thought the stud patern was the same but the two studs with the alignment boss at the base are opposite from the pp 550 to the reed 550. If so, you can change the studs from side to side to work.

the cranks are the same & I have pjs 550 cranks in my pp motors that I got from Gordon.

Gordon may still have some pjs case assemblies left (he was selling them on e-bay a while ago). I would not interchange upper & lower cases as they are a matched set

if the cylinder says 530 on it it shoud be a 550 case

The other case you have looks to be a factory kawasaki 550 reed cylinder asm from late 1990-94

My 1990 550sx came from the factory with a pp motor (I know, I got robbed)

There is no changing anything to get the reed cylinder on the old cases, the stud pattern is bigger,to make it work you need the cases and the head for the reed engine.

ok thanks

thanks everyone ill just try and get a js550 case to get me out. and over the winter ill keep me eye out for a reed engin crank, block, head , the lot and just bolt it in. thanks again everyone...

lots off surf to keep me going at the min lol ................

I just re-built my PJS 550 motor and noticed when I got my new pistons from weisco, the pistons that came out of the motor were different than the new ones. The old pistons had two giant holes in the side of them.(on the intake side) The new ones did not. What are the holes for? Did I get the wrong ones from weisco? They were for a reed motor and that is what I have. I have included a pic of the old pistons.

Did you put the holes and arc cut out back in? If you didnt you are loosing some power! Did the new pistons also come with cooling holes on the exhaust side? On the pjs engines these holes are only half covered by the exhaust port and as a result put fuel/ oil into the exhaust. The viper 7000 motors had those holes to let more fuel/air in with out significantly weaking the pistons. We have a couple of these skis and have played around with the intake side of the piston quite a bit and by changing the holes and the arc at the bottom you can significantly increase the power output by the engine.

I didn't put the holes and arc back in. The new pistons had three 1/8th inch (I think that was the size) cooling holes on the exhaust side. Should I have the arc and holes cut in or just run it as is. The motor has PJS cylinders. Are the holes and arc needed?

Also, Why do you need to have fuel and oil in the exhaust? Is this a cooling thing?

Gordon has a piston with the those holes painted on it he uses as a stencil to match for all his PJS pistons he makes with it.
he also has more than 6 PJS crank cases that i have personally moved around a few weeks ago to make space for other stuff we have.
Call Gordon

tell em Mark told you to call. He can help you build that motor with all parts and services.

The holes and arc are there to get the fuel/ air into the crankcase so they are needed. Like Mark said, call gordon about the location of them, he might send you a template, if not then you'll have to measure them off the old ones. The cooling holes are for the kawi 550 reed motor. The exaust port on the pjs cylinder is much wider so these holes are not covered by the cylinder walls as they pass the exhaust port. This allows fuel/oil to get into the exhaust which is not what you want.

What is the bore of your cylinders
I just stopped by my Fiberglass shop and they got a box with New never opened PJS stuff in it. There were some 75mm PJS pistons in there with the dual holes.
