Replacement coil

What's the best coil to replace my stock unit on my SJ .The wires are getting real short from cutting them back and won't last much longer .

I only care about reliability .I think I remember hearing the Blaster II coil or maybe gp760 was pretty good .

I'd buy an OEM SXR coil. Costs about $60, is the exact same part that Yamaha uses.
You need to buy terminals and boots, though. The coil does not come with any.
I've used it in fresh and salt water for over a year now without any issues.

Art, why not just replace the plug wires with some decent ones from an auto parts stores?

its pretty easy to do.

Isn't the coil sealed ??? If not I might just do that beacuse the coil is still good .how do the wires connect to the coil

I haven't been in my e-box much in the past few years .I bought all new stuff except the coil and put a new gasket on and sealed it up .

the wire to coil junction is simply sealed with epoxy.
its been discussed here MANY times.

Mark44 will happily show you a tool he has made to clean the coil of plug wire.

simply... inside the coil HOLE is a SPIKE.

the plug wire is shoved down on it, thus making the connection, and then epoxied around the perimeter of the plug wire.

trick is, getting the OLD wire out without breaking the spike.

its easier than it sounds.

\if you are looking at a new coil anyway, you have nothing to loose by fixing your old one.

razor edge around the goo holding the wire to the body of the coil, and twist and pull it out.

Not too hard, got to do one myself this week. the new wire goes down about 1.5 inches, the spike sticks up at least 1/4 inch. You have to be carefull not to crack the tower as well.

On another note, one I just put on a spare today that has a carbon shielded core like automotive, not solid wire, and it started giving me trouble as well. I'm guessing it has too much resistance, probably 6-7K ohms per foot.

cheapest:
replace your wires

good price:
SXR coil

most expensive but nicest solution:
send the coil to JSS to get new wires/boots/etc put on.
