What would cause a crank seal to blow out???

Just a bad seal? Or do I have some other issue that I need to be looking for?

Here is a pic....

Spring looks to be intact. The inner seal looks to be ok as well...though I cant really see much.

i can't tell by that pic if the finger like thigs are out... 1 seal has them, the othr doesn't, the 1 that doesn't goes on the in side, if you put the 1 with on the inside... it pushes that seal out

I remember talking about that with matt when I put these in last summer.....I'd like to think that he told me the right way and that I did it like he told me to....

Now these finger like things stick out towards the coupler? Or do they go towards the shaft?

I see what your talking about....They are on the inside one....your telling me that's wrong? It should be on the outside one?

Yes its matt....Back in the day when he lived in East Germany.

I have never had it happen but I have been told that hydraulic pressure from either water or too much grease between the seals can cause it to blow out like that. I have also heard that running the small kawi style couplers generate more heat and can cause this. Tear it down and replace all the seals with genuine Yamaha seals and just a little grease on the shaft mating surface lip and you should be fine.

yup, the one with the fingers needs to be on the outside, when you pull the bottom case half off, you'll see how those fingers are pushing on the outer seal when pressed into the groove, just switch them, you should be cool

I wonder if there is a way I can blame matt for this....

Not looking forward to tearing down this engine again.... I was hoping to make it through one season without doing anything like this.... Oh well...

I can just pull off the bottom case and replace the seal? I never thought about it that way... I was thinking I would need to tear the whole thing apart....
I'm thinking that I will need new ones....part of that seal is up on the coupler....

I never hydrolocked mine or anything... It was running just fine I just happen to find it when i was inspecting my motor after I reinstalled my flywheel. I noticed that there was an ever so slight bit of play in the rear rod bearing so I tore it apart to be on the safe side and I find a missing rod bearing cage. I just happen to find it before it destroyed everything.

SO the total bill for the seal alone wasn't 1300. But I did need a new crank, bore job, dome, ect... At least I didn't need a hole welded up in the case.
