New plug pics...

Heres my plugs after I did a plug chop yesterday.... although I did tow the ski home before I pulled them to look at them... after I did that I was wondering if waiting 1/2 hour would kinda "bake" them and ruin the reading?

anyways here they are: (I did richen the carb 1/8 turn on the high speed screw that had the plug on the right in the first pic for starters)

you got ripped, those arent new plugs!
j/k, they look gray "ashy" to me
ashy = lean = bad

read your piston wash too!

indeed, first of all you get better results. and secondly you might find something's about to grenade your engine like i just did.

1/2 should not make to much a difference, but the bumpy trayler ride home might knock the wet stuff off, making them read lean'ish. Also the engine is still pretty darn hot. so it could bake on like you said. Just pull them right away... why not?:pokey:

I was gonna do it right at the lake, but I didnt bring my camera with me to take the pics... so I figured I would wait till I got home to pull them, but then I thought about the baking action and stuff afterwards... I should have just looked at them at the lake and taken pics later.... I'll do it again maybe later today or tomorrow... I'll also pull the head tonight if I am actually home...

Eric are those brand new plugs? I heard you don't want to tune on new plugs. Get some hours on those new plugs. Once you have some hours on then it will be a lot easier to read and tuning adjustments will be easier to notice

i think it is you dont wont to warm up on new plugs and take a reading.. but once the motor is warmed, time for new plugs.

note, i'm no expert on plug reading or tuning myself. but i have been sucking at it for long enough to post what i'v read/been told.

I used these plugs for about 2 hours at least before I took the reading which is plenty of ride time on the plugs.... I dont think you have to wait that long... just imagine how many times each cylinder fired during 2 hours of hard riding...

i'v been told 5mins on new plugs on a warmed engine.

but come to think of it i can not recall where that info came from. anyone know for sure. because i'v been basing my readings on 5min plugs.

well.... I tried a few more plug chops today when I got back to Springfield Lake.

The plugs have a nice layer of oil all the way around the rim like I think they should... I kept on richening the mix trying to get the tip to be brown after the chop but it didnt really get very brown.... I am wondering if its my oil? I have heard that you cant really do reliable plug readings and piston wash with amsoil synthetic oil.... the more I richened I just kept getting more and more white smoke coming out my front exhaust till it was like a smoke-stack when I was at WOT.... I turned it back to what I was using before.... seems to be working well for me... like I said it has a nice layer of oil 360 degrees around the lip...

never cuts out.... never bogs down.... brap! all the way through and on the top it screams..... cant figure out why my plugs arent cholatey brown.... think its my oil.... like I said it does have that nice layer of oil all the way around the lip of the plug which I think is a good indication that its good... isnt there something somewhere that says you dont really ready the tip and the ceramic part? its more the rim and down inside the plug or something?

Plug chop is pretty hard to get results on these days you have to consider other chemicals in fuels from different refineries ethanol amounts etc. etc.

The best and only way to set your carbs is with a tachometer then you know they are tuned and delivering the proper amount of fuel. IMO.

Yes you read the ceramic where it comes out of the plug, should have a chocolate colored ring. You need a magnifying glass and a pen light but I would never tune an engine with this reading unless I had countless hours of tuning and plug inspection like Chuck or Randy at Team scream probably have.

Yes highest rpm. Do it on the trailer with ski in the water so you have a load on the engine.

Tiny tach will not work they do not react fast enough.
