When installing the pumpseal i noticed with the pump bolted back up that the seal is not all that tight against the hull. I just greased it up with DOW33 to help prevent it from dryrotting, so no silicon was used. Their is not visual gaps but i can easily slide a popsicle stick between the seal and the hull with nearly no friction... this normal? I just figured it would be TIGHT. :ugh:

you need to fill that gap with something, on mine i use ultrablue because with my pump in and bolted up it also had enough of a gap to suck air from the pump area above the rideplate.

TAKE IT FROM ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Make sure the dowel/alignment pins are in the top side of the wear ring that go into the holes in the hull!!!!!!!
If u r missing the pins-MAKE SOME AND PUT THEM IN!!!!!!! I fought a leak at the seal for a month before someone told me bout the pins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thongbongers and I worked on his FX1 for months trying to get a cavatation problem solved. We finally pulled the pump seal off about 1/2 way and filled the gap with silicone on both sides of the seal then installed the pump. So it make a solid bond on both the pump and the hull. Problem solved. I wish we had tried that first time would have saved hours of pain and a repitch job at impros.

when installing the pump, i like to just hand-tighten the front two bolts, then take a 2' 2"x4" and 'hook' it under the rear lip of the ski and in back of the steering nozzle. then i push forward on the bottom of the 2"x4" with my left hand (this forces the pump to 'squish' the seal). i tighten the front two bolts with my right hand.

then i shim the rear of the pump with whatever shims are needed for the gaps that are on either side.

new 'pump packings' are very cheap, btw.

humm, did not notice the pins,, i'll pull it and look again.

I'm using a new pump packing, my old one had folds in it since last season:27: I'm kinda confused about the 2x4 thing? what does that accomplish that just pushing the pump back with your hands? and even then, the pump's not going any farther back then the boltholes :cool2:
just got confused.

the 2x4 pushed the pump forward to seal against the pump shoe. if yours is like mine i get the pump in with the alignment dowels and there is still a gap and any amount of 2x4 pressure will not compress the seal. Ultrablue. it is easy to remove later on when you remove the pump and is tough enough to withstand the water pressure. look to make sure is squishes out around the seal after your all bolted up.

I have never seen a pump in a SJ that the seal was not tight, sounds like your pins may be keeping the pump from compressing the seal.
It should be tight. the only thing I have ever put on a seal was just a little grease to keep it fresh.
