too much exhaust smoke?

Took my just purchased/repaired 90 squarenose to the (Michigan 48 degree) water today, ran it on (the trailer) for about 10-15 minutes, noticed it was smoking quite a bit.
My 99 sxi pro doesn't seem to smoke at all.
The SJ has been sitting for the last 4 years until I bought it 2 weeks ago, so maybe it has something to do with that, or?

Could just be oil collected and sitting on the bottom of the crankcase.

Could be the mixture is way too oil rich, did you mix gas, or is it injected in?

Well you can pull the plugs and if they're solid black you're probably rich but I would actually take it out for a ride and see. When you're idleing on a trailer/giving it quick bursts of throttle on the trailer, the smoke seems 10 times worse than normal. If you don't wanna ride it yet at least keep the gas on enough to really warm the engine up and vary the throttle a bit.

I usually have a trail of smoke following me out of the no wake zone when I first start out but after that I almost never see the smoke again...even during the idle back to the ramp.

Hi George.
When are you coming back to SE florida? You know it is warmer here LOL. I did not test the water in few month but I'm sure that is better then 48'.
I had a ski that smoked a lot for a little will once and found out the water box was full of oil and the water reg this guy did him self to the water box was out. also check if you have water coming out of the exhaust or is it just dry smoke.
I also like to thank you for the encouragement you have sent me.

It's good to hear from you Louie. We hope to be coming back before too long, cause I love the summers there. I don't know if you know this but our place on Isle of Venice was heavily damaged during hurricane Katrina and the next one, Wilma, made an even bigger mess!
There has been a lot of problems with the rebuilding/insurance/HOA.....B.S!!
Maybe I will just buy another place now that prices are getting a little bit more reasonable.
Back to my SJ, I think I will just wait till it's "warm" enough (hell yes I have a full wetsuit)to go ride it and see if it clears up like others have said.
Meanwhile, you stay positive and know that there are a lot of us all praying for your recovery.
