I got a 61x ported cyl on 62t stock cases. i am going to be running the stock carb set-up with a riva head but not sure what dome size cause they are not interchangeable. later i plan to switch to a single carb ATP set-up. Not sure if all this info is relevant to what my question is but what would you guys recommend for the pistons? The cyl bore is 82mm with a stock stroke. I am looking for max bottom end. thanks

I say Wiseco, because after two sets of Pro-x I am sick of that company. I wish I had put Wiseco's in my new motor. Pro-X does not give you any information with the pistons such as ring end gap or piston to cylinder wall clearance, and when you call them on the phone you get some dufus who has as much knowledge as yourself.

Since ProX are nearly identical to OEM cast pistons it should be a no brainer on how to set them up. Use the OEM specs and no problems, this is the way I and many others I know have set them up and it has always been good.

I think you'll have problems mixing the flat tops and your head. Unless you get a head witn removable flat top domes

Not to mention that the pistons would be several mm lower in the bore than the domed pistons. You have to consider your whole setup when switching to flat tops to make it all work. Get with a reputable engine builder to like Chuck at XScream or Art at Jetworks and they can help with these questions and what is best for your budget.

Just go with a set of Wiseco or Pro-X pistons and have the cylinder bored by a reputable jet-ski machine shop.

Flat top pistons are twice the price and they require the cylinder to be machined for the correct port timing and squish band gap with special domes.

To tell you the truth thier not real reliable unless set up almost perfectly. Most builders will try to sway you away from flat tops unless your racing the ski

I prefer Wiseco in my own personal ski's, due to them being forged and their lightness, but for cast pistons I like Pro-X and Vertex.

Both the Pro-X company and the Vertex company in Italy are divisions of the P.M.I. group. ART makes pistons for the Pro-X company. Pro-X and Vertex pistons both have identical ART and Yamaha designation codes inside of them just like OEM pistons(also made by Art) do. All from the same molds. They also used the same RIK(Riken company) ring sets.

Some people on here may not be familiar with Vertex pistons that I am a dealer of.
These high quality pistons are manufactured in Italy, and are priced competitively despite their exotic origins.
The company started in 1953 and is the leader in Italy and in Europe for Powersports pistons production, with as customers the most important OE companies and Racing Teams in motorcycles, go-kart and marine ranges.

Piston skirts are Molybdenum Bisulphide coated for faster break in and increased piston life. All pistons are heat treated with a T5 hardening and tempering cycle.
Vertex Pistons are race proven to be a strong and hi performance piston.

Actually the ring gap measurement is quite different with the pro-x pistons than oem. Also the dimensions on the inside of the piston that retains the wrist pin bearing is also different.

i find that hard to believe if they are all ( vertex, pro-x and oem) cast from the same mold.
That being said. I like my vertex that I'm running

Well stock wrist pin bearings 23.65mm and the two washers together measure 1.5 mm if my memory serves me correct. The bearing and washers did not fit in between the two dowel holes in the Pro-x piston. Pro-x aren't exactly the same as OEM imo. Pro-x told me to run .024 ring gap on an 82.5mm bore.

My next set will be Wiseco's, I still think the Pro-x's are decent though.

Was this on a KAW or a YAM? just curious.

Also I would like to add that though many pistons claim to be the aftermarket equivelent, it is not the "exact" same part. Yamaha has ART make their pistons to their specifications. These specs are properties of the Yamaha Corp and are patented.
