buy the cheapest one you can find, and keep it as a spare/back up.

I did that last year for sons boat, tiny little battery, and it works fine, starts the boat fine, runs the bilges just fine.

It just doesnt have the stamina to clear water out of the engine if you sink it.

otherwise, its a perfectly functional battery

thats a good plan Matt. I think I will do that. off to walmart I go.

I defiantly would NOT recommend filling them with distilled water.

The Odyssey AGM batteries are filled with gel electrolyte and you can access the fill area under the top cover plate that snaps loose.

There are removable rubber caps on top of each cell were they filled from the factory.

If the plates inside each cell are ever exposed from excessive charging or acid boil-off that portion of the plate will never function normally again.

From what I have read about the AGM technology, if you expose the sealed cell chamber to outside air it will seriously affect the life of the cell. The exposure to the extra oxygen screws up the chemical balance and decreases its ability to work properly because it is a recombinant system. If the safety vent opens due to overcharging then you have already starting killing the cell from excessive heat causing the over pressure.

I have one Extreme battery in my SXR that is on its 3rd season with no problems. I bought a new Extreme in spring of 2006 for the SJ and by early spring of 2007 it was DOA. Tried to take it back and got the "WE have no record of you buying it here", my response "I got the bank statement that shows it"............ "Sorry bud"

needless to say they lost my business.

That's just it. Odyssey doesn't warranty their stuff directly - the dealers do.
As long as you have a decent dealer, you're set.
If you don't, you're screwed.

BatteriesPlus is hardly cheap, and it's the only retailer around here.

Exactly what is your point?

Even if I were being cheap by picking the cheapest retailer, the fact stands that Odyssey will not warranty their batteries, in direct contradiction to the printed warranty statement that comes with each battery.
A good analogy: If I were to buy a brand-new Chevy truck, I better not be a cheap bastard and buy the lowest new priced truck I can find, because the warranty might be no good.

Sorry, that's backasswards, and you know it. Where I buy the product has nothing to do with warranty service, in my book.

My point is all these guys buying Odyessys off of ebay and such are screwed when it comes time to warranty them, the customers who buy their odyessys from me get taken care of ,thats my point.Which brings us back to sometimes being cheap bites you in the azz dosen't it?.

And my point is this: It doesn't matter where I buy it. If it's a good product, it should get warrantied, no matter where I bought it.
But, Odyssey refused to honor their own warranty.
(Please, look it up on their warranty statement, and you'll see where my beef is)

Sounds to me like you don't know what you're talking about. :clown:
I know this will go right by you, but I have a problem with a manufacturer that doesn't honor their warranty.
It isn't just the dealer that won't honor it, Odyssey themselves won't, either.

Besides, I've busted three Odysseys now, why would I need to find a better dealer?
I sidestepped that and found another battery.

PS I don't expect anything but another dumbass remark from you that has nothing to do with the issue.

G'day sir.

Ok lets put it in this context Matt say my Yamaha power valve motor blows up,Its under extended warranty and I take it in for repair, now I can't take it back to Yamaha,I have to take it to a dealer right? So I take it in and am told that even though the powervalves are defective and have been updated 5 times It is not covered under warranty and I will have to pay for the repair. This means all Yahamas ever built are junk and no one should buy one right? Because if I go by your analogy thats exactly what it means.

Then you don't understand my analogy.
It is pretty simple: Battery breaks, take it to any dealer, get it replaced. (Right?)
The Odyssey warranty states clearly that you can take a defective product to any Odyssey dealer and get it replaced, provided it's within the warranty period.
Dealers don't do that.
Odyssey, when pressed, says that Dealers do not have to warranty it, and that the factory doesn't warranty them at all.

This means their warranty, as stated in the paperwork, is not the actual warranty at all.

That doesn't happen.
Take it to mean what you want, but that lie of a warranty statement (try to explain this) plus the fact that I've had three defective Odyssey batteries within one year mean to me that I will claim their batteries are junk.

I have had a 100% failure rate, and 33% warranty coverage when it should have been 100%.

LOL....an open circuit, actually.

The welds on one or more of the plates fail over time. It will indicate full voltage, but no current capacity.

One thing is for sure. I will NEVER by another Odyssey battery based on Matts proof as well as my own failure of a 2 year old.

Kirk battery (where I buy all of my batteries) quit selling them based on complaints from all of the Harley and custom motorcycle guys (http://www.clevelandmotorcyclemfgco.com/). That was even more evidence to switch everything I own.

I went to Interstate AGM's because he stocks them all and I have read good things about them.
