Wont we likely crack a nonreinforced hull when we repeatedly pancake our ski's getting half way there on a barrell roll?

Halfway is upside down, that won't put stress on the sides.
Further, I doubt you're going to get all that much height on flat water to inflict much damage (unless you're going off big cruiser wakes).

You will see the hood crack (and the stock pole) before anything else.

I didn't say not to reinforce. But take your time and do it right, and don't go overboard.

So in your opinion, what is not overboard?

I am not sure I understand the tank thing. I ordered a gallon of epoxy, 2 yards of 12oz biax, 2 yards of 17oz biax, a yard of 5.5oz cf, tons of random supplies, and 3 5qt buckets of various fillers, one being 1/2 chop, and my entire box total weight was only 24 pounds. Obviously, I'm not going to add every thing I got to the hull. So I'd say at a max, if I laid down all the 12 and 17, which would take a crap load of layers, and used all the epoxy, I might add 12-15lbs? I'm not planning on it, I'm just saying.

In the engine compartment.. I'm filling the bondline with cabosil, and adding a 6" strip around the bondline. I'm going to use the 17 for this. Then coming back and laying a strip that covers the whole side. Then in the tray, I am doing the same thing. Is that too much?

Oh, I am also lowering the pole mounting area, and who knows how many layers I will add to the underside of the pole mount and tie that into the sides. This is a SN btw, so that's why the pole area is getting leveled out, and the top deck is weak as wet cardboard.

Not going overboard:

Grind ribs
Clean every surface, sand it with 40 grit paper
Fill bondline , make sure it's a continuous surface
Lay one layer of glass (I laid two carbon/kevlar and one carbon - way overkill)
Do the same on the rear, if you have it open

Lay one or two layers under the pole bracket area.
SEAL EVERYTHING IN THE BACK!!!!!!
You don't want water-intrusion after a few months to make it heavy again.

i do want a little bling for my efforts, however i'm not going to spend two weeks f'in with the hull...it works now without doing anything. The ribs will be gone, bond line filled, interior sanded. MATT E., when u say "the rear," do you mean the tray or the rear of engine bay? The tray is closed. If u guys think the pole bracket needs some luv it'll get some glass. What else needs sealed in the back?

Yeah... just do some 17oz on the sides down to the engine mounts... then the pole bracket area, and maybe the nose.
you missed the most importaint part. the lip. someone reinforced my ski before I got it and cracked the hull in 2 places learning to roll in the surf.

Miagi-san,

Capt. noob here. I'm giving my 95 sn some luvn' this winter. I pulled the engine. Going with new ADA head, total loss, b-pipe, gel batt, new impeller & intake, kenney keepers for engine. Foot holds and turf happened last year. I'm contemplating grinding the ribs, filling bond line and laying some glass or CF on the floor and sides...POSSIBLY. I've got plenty of projects going on around the homestead that's making my ski jealous. Spring is breathing down my neck!! IDK if I really need to upgrade the hull for flatwater only riding. My trick arsenal is real limited, but i'll try anything once. I just don't want to F-up the hull and ruin my summer.

Daniel-san

if U will only try it once then NAH no worries run OEM he he he!!!!!!!

I say reinforce now... if you break it- you will have to reinforce the crap out of it to regain the original strength... at least that is the logic that people preached to me when I was debating what to reinforce... mine doesnt weigh that much more than when I started... actually after the aftermarket parts I added I am prob still about -10 pounds from when I started...

Plus I've lost 10 pounds off myself :) --> so I'm at -20

plus its a lot easier to reinforce in the winter when you're bored....just use a kerosene heater and fast cure epoxy

If it breaks I'll do it when it breaks. You can easily reinforce a ski and put it all back together midweek (2-3 days for everything), I pretty much only ride weekends, so I won't miss a day.

Why fix something that isn't broken. I'm probabaly the odd man out here, but I don't care, I like the boat to be light.

It will be a good incentive to get all the way around. :fing02:

I say reinforce now...

WERD.. I cracked Butchs new stock black OEM 07 SJ hull last summer right away through the hood seal lip area and around up on that curving corner on the sides with some 3/4 rolls on flat. These were good solid breaks going all the way through, with some shattering/crumbling areas too. OEM is not made for slapping hard on the sides.. Same with stock hoods. I've put 12" cracks down the sides before. Also the bond line is a real common place for it to start cracking too...

Ya, but then you have to outside cosmetic work to do also.. Also loosing your original hull integrity and being together. Sounds like more work to me.. Unless you run a roach with a rattle can paint job.

Yeah if you dont want to trash a nice oem un-reinforced hull IMO.
I do admit I'm very ruff on ski's, but still its just common sense unless your gonna ride like a :purr: in a Kawasaki Jetski training video! haha.

You have been warned..lol

Look for my broken hull thread come June.... I know I'm taking chances, but I'm saying, its not like people havn't done barrels without a reinforced, fully ready for battle ski...

To convince noobs to do it right off the bat is wrong. They have a while before they will need it, no need to overbuild in the shorterm, to prevent the chance of failure in the long run. Reinforce when you're getting upside down and the hull is taking its slaps... Its not like it will explode, it just cracks. Big deal.

Some people reinforce the crap out of their skis and do nosestabs all day long....

I'm not rolling yet, once my hull is taking its lumps I'll build it accordingly.

I mean the rear, in the tray. IF it is open.

Pole bracket and hood lip (on the hull) are also very important.
