BR8ES solid top question

Okay, what's the diff here?

Found NGK #7986 which is also described on a auto site as BR8ES-11, and is referred to as a "Yamaha marine" plug on the Oreilly Auto site, doesn't mention BR8ES-11 at all. Then I also found #3961 on the Oreilly site, which is what folks here have noted in the past as the number for the BR8ES Solid Top plug, but Oreilly says its a "SeaDoo Marine" plug.

WTF??? Are these the same?

-11 comes out of the box with a larger gap, 1.1mm I believe. It is designed for wider gaps (instead of stretching the standard electrode away from the center as you open it up too wide).

Just the standard BR8ES (not -11). Solid top is better than screw cap of course, just so the cap doesn't back off over time.

Unless you are running a strong total loss system, you likely won't be able to run a 1.1mm gap. Most stock and even Advent and Enhancer ignitions are typically 0.020"-0.025".

Just to add some info for people that may not know, NGK BR8ES plugs comes in a few flavors.

Stock # 3961 is a solid top where the plug cap goes, stock # 5422 is a screw on top that can loosen over time.

BR8ES-11 have a larger gap than the standard ones do. Yes you can just bend the outer electrode to get that gap, but it's not the correct method so the -11 has more metal for the outer electrode to give it the proper bend.

Also, the cost for the 2 types of cap plugs is the same from NGK, if they cost more at your store, they are marking them up for some reason. This is info from a NGK rep from back in the rec.sport.jetski days. All you younguns probably don't even know what that is...

The solid tops are the way to go, I have had the screw on tops lossen many times even though I tighten them before installing. I do use the screw on top plugs in a pinch because the are $1.50 at Advanced auto and the solid tops are $2.00 through my local dealer (at a discounted price and by the box). Never used the -11's i dont believe. I never even check gap, just look at them and stick em in thur!!!!!!
