painting hood... white or black?

I have a 2007 superjet. As most of you know, the 07 is black on the top and white on the bottom.

I am getting a used wamiltons hood and will be painting it black or white...

I will be getting an x-metal pole kit which will be black.

I was kinda leaning towards white for the hood/nosepiece... just because I dont know how easy it would be to match the black of the stock gelcoat... I dont even know how close the xmetal pole will match the stock black, so maybe the white would kinda break it up? I am mainly concerned about the paint not matching and looking odd if I paint it black... anyone have good success with matching that black gelcoat with automotive paint or just rattlecan paint?

It should be easy to match, its black. You can probabaly get the paint code online. Don't worry if the Xmetal pole doesn't match, the difference won't matter.

White looks unfinished in my opinion. People get hoods in white gelcoat and don't bother to paint it trying to save a few bucks.

Do you guys think it would be worth paying a professional to paint it with automotive paint with some flex addative?

Or should I do it with some black appliance paint with some clear coat or something similar?... I suppose if I want a good match, and for it to look stealthy like you said I should have a pro do it huh?

i don't know if i would go with appliance paint on an '07 with a nice new hood. however, you can try it and always sand it off if you don't like the outcome.

if you can't paint it yourself with the right paint etc. you might be able to get a great paint job at a decent price at a local place.

call around and see what they quote you...

Another thing I was thinking about was I see that Waterdawg is offering his xmas sale on hoods and nosepieces... I wonder if his black matches the stock superjet black...

Not sure if I would want to trade up a wammer hood for the waterdawg though... I just dont know enough about the quality of either to make the decision...

I could sell my hood and nose piece and end up within close range of getting his hood and nosepiece with the money I raise...

anyone have any experience with both of these hoods?

Maybe someone has actually had someone do this for them and could give me the price they paid?

Go black. I had to repaint my stock 2004 hood because Yamaha paint and/or paint process sucks and the paint was just blowing off my ski. Their gelcoat is fine, paint is garbage. I stripped all the paint and brought it to an autobody shop. I told the guy "Next time you blast a black car, blast my hood and nose piece". That week he had a black Mitsubushi Eagle Talon come in for some work and my stuff got done at the same time. Matches perfectly and is rock hard compared to stock.

I have painted entire ski’s actually the top of mine is black and I think the white hood would look like a black car with a white fender. You also have a nice new ski so spend a couple bucks and paint it correctly. You can do it that is the only way to learn how it is quite easy if it is prepped correctly.

No need for flex additive for the hood or nose piece, if the nose piece was a stock plastic piece flex additive would be your friend for that piece it will not be needed on a glass aftermarket nose.

The hood you purchased if it the same one you sent me pics of is in pretty bad shape but could be repaired with a lot of work. IMO I think waterdog has a special on there hoods for 400 bucks but you will never know how long you will have to wait on it, you may get it this summer or next..maybe!

Prep it yourself and take to somebody to paint if you don't have the stuff to do it. I'd get single stage black and get a decal co. to cut some OEM matching vinyl in similar shapes.

how much did they charge ya for...

$75.00 prep/prime/black/clear for the hood and nose if I could wait for him to have a black set up in action. They did some kind of chemical etch or something(I am no paint guy) for better adhesion,which 3 different body shops told me is a step Yami must apparently skip because they were all pretty appalled at how easy my paint was coming off the hood. To me, it was a good deal. Had I done it myself I know it would have looked like ass, and I would have been pissed every time I looked at it.

If I needed it right away and he had to do a separate set up, he was gonna charge me $150.00. I chose to wait, I think it was a whole three days, and paid them 75 bucks.

first, stick with the Wammer Hood, it is proven and much better quality.

second, find a good body shop, get them to paint it the next time they are shooting black on a car/truck, that way there is not setup or anything, may take you a while to get it back but hey, its winter.

GREAT idea about waiting for the automotive shop to be painting a black car! I will definatalely do that!

Should I be worried that any black car paint will not necessarily match the black that is already on my ski? or is black not a color you really have to worry about matching?

Mark, I like the idea of doing it myself... my garage and house is just not setup to paint... if I was going to paint my whole ski I might take the time to learn and put plastic over everything.. but if I can get somebody to do it for <75 bucks then I will go that route...
