bottom hull paint?

I've been searcing paints and am confusued on what to go with. i'm looking for something that will not come off, scratch easy, when i slide it on the sand. There is automotive two stage paint, gelcoat and Interlux. it's what i know of. what do you guys think will hold up better?

thanks

I spoke to Interlux and they were idiots over the phone, said they don't offer anything for that purpose.

I used an Epiphanes Topdeck paint and it started to peel. I had it so I figured I'd try it.

Whatever you try, you will need an epoxy based primer for the SMC Superjet hull.

Honestly, unless you can deal with imperfections and paint chips, don't bother painting the bottom.

Or paint it white, but than again unless your ski is totally brutal why bother.

no such thing. if you really want to hold a color. you could use some die in resin and put a new layer of fiberglass on the bottom of your hull and then gel coat it the same color. that way when your gel coat rubs though the fiberglass underneath wont be that noticeable .....until you rub through that.

i'm painting the bottom of an xl700 that the guy i got it from rolled some funky blue plaint onto it and called it good. was looking at my SN bottom and has some bad scrapes really worn, so i want to fix it and am going to have to paint it again.

Sand off blue paint, repaint white.

I gave up on hull painting. Just rework your topdekc paint scheme to work with a white hull.

Now if you want to paint the sides of the hull its more doable than the bottm, but than you'd have a seam where the side meets the bottom, and most likely paint would flake from here.

i was planning on painting the hole ski white, and using meatalic orange for the plastics,. i just have two peojects at the same stage, bodywork and paint, couch, and SN and it's comeing really slow, due to christmas coming.

All I want is for the sides of my hull to be black and stay that way.
Tried appliance epoxy in a rattle can but that didn't hold up all that well so my next step will be Interlux.

The appliance stuff has stayed nice and shiny but as soon as it scratches the paint starts pealing back.

I'm going to reshape the bottom of my hull and lay 2-1/2 layers of fiberglass over bottom and sides, then will be able to properly apply gelcoat.

You really should not be putting gelcoat right over raw SMC.

BTW: I stripped old paint then re-gelcoated my SJ with a gelcoat "cup gun." The cup gun is pretty cheap ($120) and makes for quick work. It is very messy and lots of work but I have always felt a gelcoat finish is better for a surf ski since durability of finish it more important than *bling* factor.

"Bling" is the last thing on my list, I just don't like the way my ski looked all stock. By painting the hull sides it allowed me to keep it stock but different.

What if I skimmed the sides with epoxy resin (very thin), would that make a better surface to apply paint or gelcoat ?

Sanford, what are you trying to do now ?
You adding layers for strength overall or making drastic changes ?

really! if i wanted to without add ing layer of glass, to gelcoat what do i do then? wouldn't adding glass to the hull add more weight?( more than just the usual reinforcing on the inside)

Don't skim with epoxy. The reason for the figerglass is to add some tooth for the gelcoat and in my case, for shaping. Added weight will be negligible (I'll guess < 3lbs). Also, its important to be aware that you should not be gelcoating over epoxy resin. It should be polyester resin. Whaler and Spectrum also agree with this. Some gelcoats will not cure properly if applied over epoxy resin (there are other reasons too). However, West will tell you this can be done if you follow a certain preparation method.

Sanford, what are you trying to do now?

Two things. 1; to fix/repair all the damage suffered from the big surf we had here 2-3 weeks ago (mostly nose related). 2; to reshape and make the strakes more aggressive and molding in some tubbies.

If you do it right, the added weight should be well under 5lbs. I beach my SJ 15FT up on the beach every weekend and no paint in the world will hold up.

I'm not a weight weenie and to be honest, any extra weight added to the lowest part of a ski (low c/o/g bottom) will only help in ocean hook-up and tracking.

EDIT: I almost forgot. For anyone that is gelcoating, it is vital to know that there are 2 types of gelcoats (actually its 3). You can buy them with or without the WAX added. If you use gelcoat with wax added, you must sand before applying an extra layer. Gelcoat without wax can be re-coated after if tacks. I always buy gelcoat without wax and have a 1pt container of wax additive so I can mix and use how I wish depending on project. If you spray or roll with a wax added gelcoat then respray, the final layer will not chemically bond.

i would just use a 99 cent can of spray paint. every thing is gonna wear off eventually from beaching.

i have heard that some have rhino lined the bottom of the hull. but idk how much weight that would add. but that would be very tough.
