anyone got one? what are your inmpresssions? was it worth it?

Our PS2 died a horible death and we are looking at getting a new console.

90% of the use is from the kids. I almost never play with it. we have tons of PS1 and PS2 games the kids still play daily, so I dont want to switch platforms, so that means; a new PS2 or upgrade to the PS3. I know they are still making games for the 2, but for how long. I bought both my boys game boy advaces about a year after the DS came out now you cant even get games anymore except at game stop (used). I really dont want to have a repeat of that debacle, but I dont want to spend $600+ on a game console either.

I'm torn.

yeah, but the ps1 was the same way. then over night the price dropped to $129 ( current price on a PS2) and poof, they were gone for good.

well i work at bestbuy and i was talking to the PS rep the other day. She said that the ps2 is going to turn into more of a family system now and they will make games for awhile, having the ps3 and ps2 continue to exist simultaniously.

I have a PS3 and it is a huge difference from the PS2. The remotes are wireless with no batteries. The good part is that it doesn't weigh much, the bad part is that when they die you have to plug them into the PS3 with the machine on.

They just release new PS3 units with larger hard drives. To be honest, you really don't need the largest drive available (80Gb, I think). I have the now defunk 20Gb and I don't even think I'm using 1Gb.

Downside to the PS3 is that BluRay has all but lost the HD video format; think of Beta versus VHS. So don't look at buying the PS3 for the BluRay player capability.

Another downside is that the games are pushing $60.

You need to look at what type of games your kids prefer. First person shooters, probably find another system. Driving games, PS3 is pretty good.

ps3 sucks, don't waste your money. It will not be around for very long, it is losing badly in the console war to both XBOX360 and the Wii. I would vote to get a 360, plus they can be modded pretty easily. PS3 also has a terrible game selection, and word is that developers hate it because it is much harder to program games for the than the 360. Also to date the graphics are not as good as 360, and the fact that the 360 cheaper. you could buy an old used ps2 from the pawn shop and a new 360 and probably save money over a ps3.

ps3 is ahead if its time, so no games have used its potential, yet!
if you got a hidef tv theres no other choice imo, a blueray reader alone costs nearly as much as the ps3.

That still doesn't change the fact that a game thats on both systems hooked to the same tv looks better on the 360. I have 2 HDTVs and prefer my 360 by far over the ps3, plus it is modded. There are hardly any decent games on the PS3 period that aren't on the 360, the 360 exclusives are MUCH better. And who buys a game machine to watch movies? Bluray/hd dvd players are getting cheaper fast. When it is over, the ps3 will be viewed a big failure for sony, they tried to do too much which is why they aren't selling. By the time the games are able to use the potential of the system like you are saying, a new console will probably be coming out. 360 has an insurmountable lead in console sales

PS3 IS THE SHIZZ I love mine. Like said above, the games are not even up to capacity yet. They designed this thing to be on top for many years. It is also a blu-ray player, which is Hi-Def dvd. While some think HDDVD is winning the race in HD, I have done tons of research on this topic and Blu-Ray is stomping all over HDDVD. There are 73% going Blu-Ray and 27% going HDDVD. Also, the Blu-Ray player is sweet! I don't even watch dvd's any more. If you buy a PS3, you will be able to eliminate all other components and use just this for all your games, DVD, Blu-Rays, pics. It also plays all computer files including MPEG, JPEG, WMV, literally EVERYTHING. You can even surf the web with it. X-Box needs to up the bar a little.

I believe those computer files can be used just fine a computer which everyone on here has. Those are a bunch of gimmicks. It is a GAME system. Where is Halo 3, or bioshock for ps3? Why did xbox360 sell more than twice as many units in august? September numbers won't be out for a few weeks, but I guarantee with the release of halo 3 360 crushed it even worse, and october may be worse than that since halo was launched at the end of the month. ps3 won't be around too long if sony keeps losing so much money on it. grand theft auto 4 delay is going to hurt ps3 a lot more than xbox 360.

let me break it down for you:
PS3: worse graphics + worse games + higher price = worse system
xbox 360: better graphics + better games + lower price = better system
up what bar?

let me break it down for you

X-box 360 is for homos. PS-3 is for cool people. So there. Times infinity.

so go in your room at your parents house and cry or tell on me for making fun of you.

Your right, X-Box is so cool, it may just put Sony out of business. Or maybe it may even take over the world. ALL HAIL X-Box 360

real good argument, turning to name calling. I was stating real information to back my posts up. Do you not care about what games you can play? Xbox Live also kicks the poop out of ps3 online. There is no way anyone can think the ps3 game lineup is better than 360 for now, or the future. PS3 is for nerd ps2 fanboys that can't accept 360 is going to win this time around. Ps3 has fallen flat on its face harder than the original posters signature vid.

ive always likes sonys lineups, ever since play one. i have really stopped playing video games, but i should use my psp more often when out at pismo. last weekend we watched pulp fiction on it. badass. in a year or two i may consider a ps3, but like most of the world im going to wait for the price to come down and the developers to rethink how they make their games. gt5 looks incredible though..

Don't get me wrong because I really enjoy my PS3. However, Blu-Ray is a long way from "stomping all over HDDVD".

Paramount and Dreamworks (two of the largest studios in the movie business) have announced that they will only put out movies on HD-DVD and DVD. Sony is one of the few remaining studios to distribute Blu-Ray movies. I like having the high-def option, but this is going to be another Beta/VHS match-up where the better technology will probably not beat out cheaper prices. And to this, I must admit I went with the wrong technology. Thankfully I have not bought any Blu-Ray movies.

I went with the PS3 because I had a PS1 and PS2. I had the games already and I was familiar with the remote (which by the way, does not have replaceable batteries - to the comment above). I do not play first person shooter games, so Halo 3 does absolutely nothing for me.

After you add on the wireless adapter ($100) and wireless controller ($50) to the $349 system, you are right at the 60Gb PS3 price ($499). Then if you wan to watch HD-DVD movies you still have to buy the $180 HD-DVD player. The $279 price you typically see for the X-Box comes with no hard drive ($100 for 20Gb or $180 for 120Gb).

Sure you get to mod the X-Box, but would you rather spend time and money making your X-Box look different or playing games?

Funny thread. People get way to serious about this.
Buy whatever the fark you like. Geesh....fanboys everywhere.

I buy systems based on games currently available and on the horizon.
And based on that, I went the 360, and I am very happy with it.

I don't watch movies or use it as a media player.
I play video games on this video game console.

You can just use a wired connection for 360 gaming (more reliable anyways). The wireless controller comes with the 349 system. Plus if you say blu-ray will lose, then that feature of the ps3 will end up useless. I'm waiting for a clear winner which is why my 360 w/o either is fine. Plus I am waiting for them to be able to be reproduced cheaper if you get where I am going. Blanks cost like $10 a piece.

The modding for 360 I am talking about is not case modding. I am talking about changing the firmware on the dvd-drive to one that reads copied games on dual layer discs. You can "backup" your games. This is not possible on ps3.

To cgracing dvd upscaling is on the newer 360s. All the new ones have HDMI built in.

I agree with matt e on it being a video game console. All the rest is just gimmicks imo. Whatever has the best games/graphics is the best. I'm not a fanboy (don't even have time to game much anymore), I just objectively looked at both and decided 360 is better for all the reasons i have already stated.

I will only say this one time. XBOX SUCKS MONKEY BALLS!
I hate it. I dont like shooters and neither do my kids. We unanaimously HATE the giant awkward controllers. And to top it all off it's no secret that the xbox is plagued with issues that cause them to fail, usually within the first year.

Online gaming for PS3 is free. I already have a ton of games for the PS1 and PS2, that get played regularly. There are currently over 120 titles out for the PS3 with more due to be released this month, And as Chuck pointed out, there are tons of other features as well.

PS3 wins. I got one last night.

Thanks for the help. lol
