Reinforcing - from the outside

Fl Cracker triggered this thread; I was reading some old posts a while back.

Everyone reinforces from the inside, but what about reinforcing from the outside?

Would one have to reinforce the inside of an SJ, than the outside, or could you just do the outside?

I KNOW the body work would be a beyotch, but I have a plan for that so its not my main concern. :fingersx:

Cons I can think of are
1) Using lots of materials ($)
2) Bodywork to prep for paint - have it figured
3) Weight, more area to cover, more weight added

check out the carbon fiber around the bottom deck on the ski in this thread.

I believe that is purely cosmetic as it is only on the sides of the bottom not the complete bottom. Though I could be wrong. CarterB needs to chime in to tell us what his intensions were. Nonethless it does display that things of such have and can be done.

Personally if I did what he did I don't think it would have as much strength as it would if you were to do the inside.

Reinforcing the outside would take more time and materials to do. I also don't think it would be near as strong at the hull to deck mating surface. On the inside we build up and smooth the transition from hull to deck with a filler then layer a solid sheet (or several) top to bottom. I have never had one crack after reinforcing. As you stated the finishing would be a pain in the ass unless you were content with a carbon finish. Still it would be a lot of extra work.

Only the upper needs reinforcement.. I did mine because I already had a layer of Kevlar on the inside wich is a mother fugger to sand.... and I needed a little added reinforcement.... It is strong as a MOFO... I did a 1 1/3 role this weekend and nothing happened.... I continue to hammer this boat as hard as I can/

IMO Its the best way to add sregth in the Bondline area, but it is alot of work!

the only way to reinforce the aft is externally, unless you go nuts and cut huge holes and refoam. ive seen lots of damage from rolls back there. dont see how adding material anywhere is not reinforcement, only pita would be making it look decent.

the crackheads at work try to reinforce the waterworld skis on the outside cuz they are too lazy to take the motor out. It totally messes with the handling of the ski and it usually peels off in a couple weeks. The inside is the only way to go
