To scupper or not

So im building my conversion and am debating on running a scupper or just 2 bilges. I am running a scupper and 2 bilges in my 97 but am not happy with how fast it sinks when it gets turned upside down. With the scupper it just lets air escape and water will rush in, but with out it would keep a air pocket in it to give me more time to get back to my ski. So i was thinking about just running 2 bilges which should be able to extract the water quick enough. I have already cut the hole for my scupper but I can seal it up.

i've been running one scupper and one 1100 gph bilge pump with a 1" hose. i bet 2 1100 gph bilges would be sick.

although, even upside down will a bilgepump pump out air? or will the water pressure in the hose (with the ski upside down) keep the air from being pumped out?

When the ski's upside down, the scupper will sink it in very short order.
I am getting increasingly fed up with the one-way in my Roundnose.
Leaks, sinks the ski when it's upside down, leaks water into the foam.

On my Squarenose (built this past winter) I opted to leave out the scupper/one way and concentrate on a good hood seal and two good bilges.
I haven't sunk that one yet.
The Roundnose has sunk 4 times at least this season, every time because of the scupper.

this is a great thread. I'd love to see how many riders are having trouble with their one way valve or scupper.

I have not had much trouble with my one way valve but I haven't let go of my ski long enough to have it sitting upside down long.

I have another RN coming that I want to build this winter... maybe without a one way and just use a couple of bilge pumps...

i have to replace the seals on my rn and fx1, what is this good hood seal your speaking of?

hulls work better at keeping out water (priority number 1)
when you dont bore holes in them :biggrin:
put in a scupper if you feel you need practice clearing water out of your engine:shrug:

I realize after last weekend that a watertight boat should be a concern to you:silly:

I like a scupper for rinsing off too... I know bilges will pump the water out but not all of it. How about using a duckbill style drain that dumps in the pump:dunno:

last time I checked the scupper or one-way cannot cause your ski to sink........

if the ski is not left unattended floating or upside down!!!!!!!!!!

^^ Unfortunately, my riding often involves practicing barrel rolls that sometimes end in the ski being upside down 20ft away from me.
With scupper/oneway valve = sunk ski
Wihout = not a sunk ski.

So, as far as I am concerned, the one-way is causing my ski to sink.

try this, get a plumbers plug, put it in the engine compartment side or the rear, does not matter.......... flip the ski and see how long it takes to sink......

think you may be surprised by how much goes through the hood and seal area.

You're misunderstanding me.

I realize that the water isn't coming in through the scupper/one way. That should be obvious when the ski is upside down.
The water is coming in through a ********ty hoodseal and the pole breather hole.
The one-way valve, in turn, is letting all the (slightly) pressurized air in the bilge out, making the water ingress much quicker.

Without the one-way valve there, the ski would stay afloat much longer because there wouldn't be a 2-inch hole for the air to get out.
