Problem please help

1990 superjet with brand new 701 motor in it.

I am pretty nolegible about the ski but I cant figure this one out.

It wont start like it is getting no spark

I put a srew driver in the plug boot and ground it and I get spark.
I put the plug in the boot and ground the plug and get spark
I put the plug in the boot without grounding it and I get no spark inbetween the electoded on the tip of the plug (I dont know if I am saposed to get spark or not but there is none when I do that)

Im just confused now and here is the weird thing. It did this same thing last time I road and then all of a sudden it worked and started fine the whole day

Today when I went to first start it it started and then died after like 10 sec's and this is where I am at now???

Any help would be awsome

thanks

That is correct behavior. The ground electrode of the spark plug must be grounded (when plug is screwed in this is achieved).

I would say you do not have an electrical problem. Start looking at fuel supply.

When the plug is screwed into the head, were does it get grounded too?? Im maybe thinking I have something loose

and also I have a primer and when I prime it it doesnt even fire at all no mater how much fuel i prime down the carb

Are you sure you're getting fuel into the cylinders? Put a few drops of premix into the spark plug holes, and try to start it. If it turns over check the carb or reeds. I had the same problem with mine earlier this summer, and it turned out to be the stator cover leaked. Some water got in there, and it was throwing off the timing enough that it wouldn't start.

So me trying that wouldnt be the same thing as me priming it before i hit the start button?

As long as you take the flame arrestors off and confirm that when you hit the primer, fuel goes in, it would be the same as dumping fuel down the carbs.

Make sure your primer is actually pushing fuel in.

Ok I checked it today. You dont get shocked when you thought the wires while cranking and also
My primer was working fine and I sprayed a little eather in the carbs and it would fire for a couple secs. So I changed my fuel filter with a new one and now the thing runs fine??? I just dont understart why it wouldnt fire at all with the primer?

I honestly think there is something else wrong and it just fixed it self over night but i think it will happen again

Here is another thing I noticed. Sometimes like a week ago out on the lake I would get off the ski and then go to start it and the start button wouldnt work or something. I wouldnt get any noises or anything and it was usually acting like that all the time. Now it doesnt do it at all and turns over every time you hit the start button???

Mine did that also. It was my wire connections. I sprayed some electrical cleaner on them. Some stuff you find at the auto store. Then I used some grease and pushed them back together and no problems since. Also if it happens out at the lake you can switch the wire leads around. Your stop bottom will now be your start. If it spinns over then you know where your problem is.
