Alright so finally i'm ready to order my biaxal from uscomposites. About how many yards of it do I need to lay two layers on both sides of the hull, under pole bracket and do a fair amount of hood work. I know i'll want extra just to be safe but any ballpark yard estimates would be dandy.

Just to be sure, I want the 1708 Knytex Biaxal, right? http://www.uscomposites.com/specialty.html It's the first one at the top.

Yes, or if you want something a bit lighter, the 1208 DBM is the same thing but 12 oz instead of 17.

You might want 4 or so yards of the 50 inch width stuff, its always nice to have extra laying around for small things.

If your not prone to filling and sanding, you may wanna get some 3-4 oz E glass to lay on top of the biax you'll need/want smooth, like the engine compartment, otherwise get some micro ballons so you can spread that and sand it smooth.

i ordered 5 yds of 50inch 1708 and it was over kill. and i did the engine compartment and the tray reinforcements, hood and footholds. i still have plenty. if you use the 50 the inside the engine compartment is long enough so you only need like a yard of glass for that. 4 is probably more than enough. but def go with the 50 inch

You may also want to consider the 12 oz. The 17 oz. will work, but the 12 oz. may lay and conform better to the hull. 17 oz. is pretty thick stuff.

even though the 17 is thicker it still is pretty easy to lay. i got it to lay really easily every where, as long as you don't make sharp bends it sticks fine.

and you might want to order a yard or 2 of some lightweight e glass and lay it over the sides when your done to soak up the excess rein and leave a much smoother finish.

and im almost done with a gallon can of resin. if your gonna be filling in the bondline with filler and epoxy you use quite a bit of it.

C-Rock, are you reinforcing for surf??? In Idaho?

Really, how heavy do you want your boat to be? A tank?

I'm stirring the pot here, but think there are way to many people reinforcing boats waaaay too much that dont need to be.

Think how much a gallon of resin weighs!

Just food for thought... from a guy who's been down that road and rides a TANK.

haha i'm reinforcing for some surf this summer but mainly for flatwater freestyle.

The order is complete: 6 yards of 12 oz biaxal, a quart of resin, 8 oz of fast setting hardener, carbon black liquid color pigment and a fiberglass roller  Time to finish my build!

I'm just saying keep it light. Dont over-reinforce. The occasional surf trip will not disintegrate your ski. I think what most people on this and other forums suggest for reinforcing in way too much.

Now for the full-time surf riders, reinforcement is manditory.

2 layers of 12oz a side is pretty light isn't it? or would I be fine with just one layer a side?
