crankshaft coupler REAL hot

96 SJ feels like there is some crap in pump holding it back---
coupler end that threads on the end of crank is hotter than hell 200+/- deg-
coupler half on driveshaft is 83+/- degrees
back of crankcase 1/2" from crankshaft 93 deg +/-
WTF???
took plugs out-turns freely by hand-no odd bearing type noise
turn it over w/plugs out using starter button-no odd noise-I'm confused now
if it was the crank bearing-would the cases not be hot as hell as well???

Have you checked the alignment?

If this is the one that was purchased two days ago, I would ask for a Refund.

It is the ski-and honestly-can't slam the seller-we were in a big hurry to get the ski home to ride it this weekend, therefore, not giving him time to water test it b4 he sold it. We ain't got a problem fixin it, after all, its a used ski that was just built from a pile of new and used parts. Just didn't make sense to me-if crank and coupler is hot as hell-seems like case would be hot as well.

and alignment looks real good

i once had a 550 with the same problem. pto coupler got hotter than hell. i never figured it out. my first thought was allignment so i checked it and checked it again and it definately wasnt an allignment isuue and the cases didnt heat up, nor did the driveshaft coupler. i assumed it was the rear lower rod bearing or rear main bearing. looking back, i never checked to see if the coupler was bent or distorted :dunno:

Grease the int. bearings, especially if the short shaft is hot. Could be transferring heat to coupler (just guessing).

Also, check.. double check... triple check alignment. My '05 had massive shimming all around. Needed to be elevated for proper alignment.

Check short shaft and couplers for straightness.

Is your coupler billet or OEM cast?

I ask because billet is VERY dense and will heat-soak.

Hey Gil,
:dunno: I thought the couplers were lined up pretty dam good, (Jawbreakerer) was there holding the light IN MY EYES and he thought it was lined up pretty good as well. But, this does not mean it WAS. Before tearing into this thing too far, lets try to loosen up the motor and make sure its not in a pinch side to side and top to bottom. Now that I think about it, I have had a coupler in a pinch before and it felt like it was cavatating as you described.
I really dont think it is the crank bearings as it was quiet and tight.
There is a possability that the end of the driveshaft could be bent from someone removing a prop. I have not had the prop out of this pump and dont remember checking to see if the shaft was straight. If the shaft is bent, I can have it straightend for you.
So pull the pump, and losen the motor mount bolts to reallign, or bring it up here Sat. or Sun. like it is and let me ride it and look at it.

I want it right as much as you do bro. as I built this boat and have a little bit of pride somewhere in me.

As for KEEFER and Tricky :shooter3: Its ON.

Hey bro-there are NO hard feelings from me or Sherry here-she fully understands she bought a used ski put together from the ground up in a hurry and did not allow u enuf time to water test it. We are gonna play the
alignment game tonight and see what gives-I got some real good instructions from a highly respected individual today-JESSE-lmao!!!

You built a awesome ski that just needs a little tweekin-as usual-yer shiznit ROCKS!!

So it was you and "(Jawbreakerer)" gettin your wrench on huh? Did you have a safety meeting before you clocked in at the 615 ski factory :nutkick::pokey::smashfreakB::spank::moon::trink26::trink26::439::439::clown::clown::biggrin::biggrin:

Just wondering what others do....Crank bolts down with shims and check alignment, or just shim and check alignment without cranking bolts in?

Doug

I believe the proper method is to get it close w/o rubber dampner tighten bolts and if its good mark position thuroughly. Unbolt and slide forward to insert dampner and rebolt in same position and double check. Repeat if needed.
I dont believe allignment is the issue on this one though. We will see when Gil gets it apart. There may be other things involved, like stripped driveshaft, bent driveshaft, maybe the dampenner was in a pinch initially and has worked its way straight, hard to tell without looking at it and riding it.
