I'd be willing to bet there is 20x more sbt Cranks and top ends out there running just fine. Vs oem engines.

Most 2 stroke failures happens in the first hour. Or the owner screws it up down the road. Rarely do metal parts just randomly let go.

I deal with oem and aftermarket daily.

This is not a statistical possibility since all SBT engines are rebuilds of OEM engines, thank about that one for a minute.

If I touch your yamaha engine. Put bearings on the crank. Bore the cylinders. Measure everything to spec, and assemble it. It is not an "oem" engine.

Sbt leads the market. By far. For every failure you read about online, there is 30 success stories that no one mentioned.

I wouldn't buy an sbt engine. I'd run one on the west coast surf though and have no significant fears of failure.

Sorry to rag on this post. Run sbt or don't. Idc

Every single SBT engine could quickly fail and they would still be the largest supplier just because of price. I have come across some SBT cranks that lasted a while but their quality is still garbage. OEM is only slightly better.

I put a SBT in my Dads Yamaha WaveVenture 1100 and its still going strong after 5 years. Ive also ran a SBT crank in a high compression DASA 800 NPV with MSD TL with very aggressive curve on 110 Sunoco fuel, B pipe, BJ 44's, ported, etc. for 2 years of hard riding, then it blew..lol
But hey man I got my moneys worth for sure!

My whole point here is with SBT it's a crap shoot you might get a good engine or you might get on that's not so good , it's a game of odds even a broken clock is exactly right two times every day

Never had seen that phrase before @WFO Speedracer so had to look it up. lol

“The phrase literally means that a broken analog clock will be right twice per day. If the clock has stopped at 3:00pm, it will display the correct time again every 12 hours, at 3:00am and 3:00pm.

Figuratively, this phrase is applied to people who usually don't do things right, and surprisingly have had a good idea or done something well. It is a sarcastic statement drawing a parallel between an incompetant person, and a broken clock which is wrong for 1,438 minutes of the day, but is right for 2 of them.”

My issue here is this just because you put in an SBT engine and it ran great does not mean all of them did and vice versa just because you put in an SBT engine and it was a dud does not mean they all are either maybe I am in a unique position here because I have put in more SBT engines than most they have had good runs and bad runs I was on the receiving end of one of those bad runs it damn near put me out of business

You cannot have 2 "3:00 PM's" in a day. Only 1!!!!!!!!!!

I have one SBT crank in a 701 that's 11 years old and still kicking. I used another in my xscream ss900 for the past 4 years. Was turning it over by hand last fall and hear a 'clink' noise. Tore it down to find an inner bearing cage was missing and the balls resting together at the bottom of the race. Lucky I caught it and didn't destroy anything but honestly I've had pretty good luck. Was showing this 750 crank to my 75 yr old jetski buddy and he says he put SBT motors in for 17 years working on skis and only had a couple come back.

So SBT, whats your failure rate? "We won't tell you but we do offer a one year warranty". To be fair, anyone who can destroy an original OEM will make short work of any replacement.

The only thing I can add is every SBT engine I have come across in used skis have blown up or had really low compression. Most were locked up and I didn't want to touch them. Probably about 10 in total and I was not the one installing them. One 701 in a RN was bored 1.00 and head cut really poorly and was only at 120 psi but looked ok inside. From my experience with then all their parts including gaskets and seals appear to be low quality Chinese sourced parts. I would rather spend the money on quality parts and not mess with it but I understand they serve a price point.

Pretty much every engine I have torn apart from them was bored 1.0mm oversize, on most engines that leaves you few option on Seadoos you are greatly narrowing your o-ring sealing surface for the head, I don't like going more than 1.0 at all. There are only two bore sizes in their engine std bore and 1.0mm oversize.

I always find the responses on these SBT threads quite funny, I will say this it is very easy to take up for SBT when you have have good results with their engines, the same is true in reverse , it is very hard for me to take up for them with the ordeals I have been through with their engines. To be fair there were other engine rebuilders I used back in the day and I havd zero issues with their engines, PMC , no issues, New York Crankshaft no issues, so it 's not like I am comparing apples to oranges here.

One more thing, the two biggest issue I had with SBT were the new Seadoo engine that sounded like trash as soon as I fired it up, they refused to send me another engine ND At the time I was an SBT dealer, that engine just made it out of warranty then puked , good for SBT not good for me and my customer, the other engine I had issues with was a Seadoo 4 tec engine that had a damaged valve cover gasket, during the test ride a lot of oil leaked out and the low oil light came on, I found the issue and replaced the faulty SBT valve cover gasket with an OEM part, instead of thanking me they wanted to violate my warranty so yeah I think they know what they can do with their engines now !
