Lay up schedule

I have access to some old molds. Wondering if one of you guys have a base on lay up schedules, tabbing. I’m going to clean up the hood mold and give it a go. But I will need to wait for better “warmer” weather to do the Hull and top deck.

what exactly are you asking?

what resin and cloth are you using? are you gelcoating the mold then laying up inside it?

wet layup? vacuum infusion?

your post is lacking in what you are doing.

Do some research and practice with small parts first. Using vacuum will bleed off excess resin and saves a ton of weight. An old airbrush compressor will work fine.

I have been digging around. I picked up another flying project. Should be a quick one. Weather should be about perfect to mix resin.
I don’t have any expectations. Just want to try my hand at building a ski. Molds are available and free.

It sounds like you already have experience with fiberglass.
I've laid up two superjet style hulls for personal use as rec and buoy ski using GP Polyester resin from a local supplier. My fiberglass skills are mediocre, but the hull has held up great so far.

The second hull was as follows.

Bottom:
Gel
2 layers 3/4 chop
3 layers 1708 for bottom and sides, overlapping in the middle
5 layers of 10 oz for bond line

Top:
Gel
2 layers of 3/4 chop
1 layer of 1708
5 layers of 10oz for bond line and hood seal area
Extra layers of reinforcement around handlepole area
2 layers of 1708 for tray bottom.

Two part expanding foam for tray and gunwhale area.

Hull weight was 10 lbs less than oem.

Did you lay it up all at once, as in one batch of resin, or did you gel, let cure or mostly cure, a layer or two, let cure, and so on?
 
polyester resins usually dont cure without wax or anoxic conditions, but you would lay it all up at once if using epoxy or vinylester resins.
The cheap GP poly resin I use fully cures after 3 days w/ no wax. Though wax could be added to fully cure same day.

For hot Arizona summers, the shop I buy from recommends spraying a light top coat of pva instead of mixing in wax on final layer.

I have pics. I wasn't sure about doing a build thread since this site has limited interest in buoy skis. As a whole, the project is about 30% complete with the end goal of ending up with a tunable superjet sized hull with modern handling characteristics specific to my preferences.

I think there’s probably more people on here than you think like running buoys. I’d love to read more about the design and construction methods. Or just throw some pics up.. I’d be surprised if it wasn’t well received.
