I am working on putting in my Menards 1 way valve and need help figuring out what materials I need to bond it to the hull and seal it all up but I am unfamiliar with anything involving epoxy, resin or fiberglass. If somebody could give me specifics on what I need and where to get it that would be awesome!

supplies:
  1. one pint/quart of epoxy resin w/ hardener (local paint & body supply store)
  2. a few quart mixing cups, sticks
  3. rubber gloves
  4. 6ft of appropriate sized pvc tubing w/ couplers
  5. pvc cleaner/glue for bonding pvc pipe
  6. 1 tube of 3M 5200 fast cure
  7. sand paper, grinder, reciprocating saw (jig saw), hole saw, power drill
you will need to cut the pvc to length (you will have to determine that) then take the remaining piece and make "V" shaped cuts in one side about .75" deep into the end of the pvc pipe to make a foam cutting saw. After you drill the holes w/ the whole saw, you will need to use the pipe to remove the foam that's in the tubes path. After the foam is removed, fit one way valve and tube in there, make a plate for the outside and seal it up on the inside of the hull w/ epoxy and on the outside seal the plate w/ 5200... don't forget to glue all the pvc good...

Thanks, that is exactly what I was looking for. I have pvc cut and fit and the drain I just need to button it up. I am dumping mine into the pump cavity so I couldnt do the foam saw thing with the PVC. We tried but it didnt work very well because of the motor mount locations (had to go from the engine compartment back) so I ended up just pulling all the foam out of the one side.

Epoxy is a very durable resin, stronger than typical polyester resin...

and.... no not all polyester resins will work w/ SMC. It's not specific to SMC.

Epoxy and Polyester resin can both be used for glass work. I prefer Epoxy becuse it's stonger. It's thicker and more difficult to work w/ but not much more..

For your application I would get some "filler" for the Epoxy too. They make a fine silica aggregate to mix w/ the epoxy to make it like paste. That way you can form it....

Ooops another question, what glass do I get for the foothold install? I was thinking about getting the 4" tape for the edges around my footholds, is there something better? How about the bottom of my tray(between holds)?

Tape is the easiest to use (doesnt fray on edges). If you get cloth you can taper the layers to prevent stress on the point where glass stops and hull begins (if you do more then one layer). 7-9 oz should do it.

I just get the sheets of glass and cut it to size, it's much cheaper.
The tape is easier though...

********, I dont know. All the cans they had said polyester resin on them...I didnt see one that specifically said "epoxy resin". Am I correct in my deduction that these where all polyester resin?

did you ask the person behind the desk????
They might not put it out w/ the rest of the stuff...
not sure, but I would bet my last dolar they have it
and you didn't see it. Alot of the time they buy huge
55 gal drums of it and package it themselves..
It won't even say epoxy on it

At the autoparts store I walked in and told the guy I was looking for epoxy resin (this is a pretty large store to with full body shop supplies) he says "I dont know much about fiberglass but all our stuff is over here" I looked at every can and they all said something like "contains polyester resin" and some other info in small print on the side, he had less of an idea of what I was talking about than I did. At the marine store I talked to the manager guy and he said all he has is polyester and has never seen epoxy resin come in or on his order forms.
