550sx setup?

Trying to setup a 550sx to handle better in the surf for my son..bone stock right now minus impeller and ride plate

he’s only 4’2” tall and 65lbs I have the pole spring bent for as much tension as possible and it’s still heavier than he would like. Any recommendations for an aftermarket spring? Need to keep stock pole so it’s long enough for him since he’s so short..

Going to put front sponsons on it but he needs more steering. I noticed prowatercraft recommends the extended nozzle without changing steering cable location..is that in conjunction with quick steer turn plate or just the nozzle alone? Anybody mod their steering like a sj and do a quick steer plate and move steering cable in on the nozzle and trim the backside for more throw? Looks like I need to change to JS turnplate bushings to run aftermarket turnplate?

I got a PJS top loader intake grate but haven’t put it on..I noticed allot of people keep the open intake grate I’m assuming to keep top speed for racing? Has enough power for him since he’s not very heavy. Any other suggestions let me

you may be able to double up pole springs. they made 2 different kinds. one is a super thick spring the other one is thinner with smaller coils spaced out. i ran a 650sx quick steer turn plate on mine with 0 degree bars so the bars are a little closer to the nose of the ski. 750 turn plate will also bolt right up. the stock bushings should work the a/m turn plate. the 750 and 550 have the same bushings. the 550 quick steer is almost the same as the sj just the cable ball is on the opposite side.

We have correct 550 quick steer plates in stock. 650 one is shorter, and bushings are totally different. 750 one the throw is different, and it does not hit the steer stop on your sub plate, and could damage your cable.

Edit / add - to run our steer plated on a 550 "SX" you will need to find some "JS" steer plate bushings.

Your pole spring is most likely old, and just plain worn out. They loose spring tension over time. Especially if the pole is stored in the down position. We too have new, HD pole springs in stock.

Top loader type scoop will be good in the surf.

You might want to think about getting rid of the thumb throttle, and switch to a finger throttle.

Ocean Pro Race Plate or the Ocean Plate works well. I ran the Quick Products turn plate (What John has would be similar, go that route!!!!). I always liked the deep and super deep westcoast open grates. Stock just does not work well.

Thanks I’ll find some bushings. And make an order. Didn’t mention but it does have bars and a cold fusion throttle on it also
