Yamaha 760 Engine help

I got a 760 raider with an engine sticker that says 64x 760A. It’s got a 62T00 on the case and 62T on the cylinder with a 64x on the head. It seams to be missing some piston pin spacers. Does anyone know if this is a 760 or a 701 62t with a 64x head. Says 64x inside the piston. 64x inside the stator cover

Both 701 and 760 have ‘62T’ cast into the cylinder. I believe the way you tell them apart is that the lower part of the sleeves (on the outer) have a groove cut in them for one and not the other. Unfortunately, I can’t remember which capacity has the grooves, and which capacity doesn’t!

Hopefully someone can chime in with the proper advice.

Don't the 64X have larger exhaust manifold bolts?

6M6 = 650LX, VXR650, WRIII650, SJ650

61X = ProVXR 701, WRIII701 SJ700 (`94~95), WaveBlaster1 (`93~95), Raider 701 (96~97)

62T = SJ700 (`96+), WaveBlaster (`96+), Raider Deluxe, XL700, Venture 700

64X = GP760, WaveBlaster2, Raider 760, Venture 760, XL760

63M = Raider 1100, Venture 1100

64U = XL700, XLT700

65U = GP1200, XL1200, SUV1200

66E = GP800, GP800R, XL800, XLT800

66V = GP1200R, XL1200Ltd, XLT1200

60T = GP1300R

64X and 62t both have the larger exhaust manifold bolts. As far as I can tell it's the exact same casting other than the gussets, it's actually kinda weird that on the 64x they changed the casting ever so slightly to have the gussets, but didn't bother removing the cast in "62t".

The differences are that the 64x has the gussets, the 62t sleeves "neck down" more at the bottom (they both have a step, it's just more pronounced on the 62t), and the exhaust port in the sleeve is lower in the 62t so the sleeve hangs down further into the port, and obviously the diameter of the bore.

62t castings are either 701 cc 81mm bore with groove in the bottom exposed portion of the sleeve or 760cc 84mm bore with no groove in bottom exposed portion of the sleeve. Both castings have reinforcement ribs running on the outside of the cylinders on the intake side (for the heavier exhaust) vs no rib on a 61x with lighter exhaust

701 62t’s can safely be bored to 84 before you run risk of cracking at groove
760 62t’s can safely be bored to 85 before if gets thin to the point of weakness at the sleeve neck and you run risk of it cracking. Yes many have been run at 85.5 and even 86 but it’s Russian roulette.

701 62t’s have lower exhaust port timing than 760’s 62t’s

Cylinder on motor is 701
Cylinder on shelf is 760
Same casting different sleeve - and if I recall one sleeve is .001” bigger in OD.

The gusset I was referring to was this little guy. I've only seen those on 760 cylinders, and I have a couple of 62t 701 cylinders that don't have those, but I guess it is possible that they are out there and I just haven't seen them.

Show a picture. I’ve seen 200+ 62t cylinders and never seen one without the rib. All 701 62t’s have the heavy exhaust even the rentals in the resort countries that have unique parts

However typing "62t cylinder" into ebay immediately brings up a bunch of cylinders with sleeves that have the groove and castings that have the gussets...soooo I guess that's not a good way to tell. Now I feel like I'm in the twilight zone previously every cylinder I've bothered to check was no gusset for a 701 and gusset for 760.

Lol. If you ever do find one again take a picture. I have never seen one

Can I claim those two I have are rare and valuable. They ah... are prototypes, "better" porting, totally rip super special :)

On a more serious note, there are lots of examples of both on ebay.

i have a 62t engine out of a 95 or 96 raider that does not have the gusset on the side. i also have another 62t cylinder off a later model sitdown that does have the gusset on the side. i think the t cylinders without the gusset would be earlier castings.

Awesome! Thanks - the 94 raider donor had it. Maybe it was a Yamaha service cylinder after they started cracking.

is this a 760 thanks
