What paint to use?

I've searched and read many threads on paint. robertg impressed me with his roll on light blue SJ.

I'm painting a square. I'm spraying it with a chitty gun and compressor, will do it real thin and multiple coats. Will wetsand. I want it to look good.

I want to select a paint that will be durable, but have good colour selection. I want a gloss finish and will clear it well.

What paint should I be looking for? Polyurethene 2 part? Epoxy based? Any manufacturers that you prefer?

Also, what type of paint/primer should I use for the hull? SMC, so an expoxy based primer?

I'm going to fill gouges with a 400 series filler and epoxy resin.

Any ideas?

I would say dump the Base/clear.

Just use single stage. Go talk to your local paint store, tell them what you want to do and they will guide you in the correct direction.

I think I used Omni on my ski.

Fwiw I used a Nason primer and single-stage Imron paint. Polyurethane. It's held up great for me. Supplies ran almost $300 though.

Body filler / glazing compound is easier to get looking good on gouges. Unless you are talking about gouges on the bottom of your ski. I'd also recommend leaving the bottom whatever color it wants to be - work around it now or deal with it later.

talk to you local napa or auto paint store, and ask to talk to their paint rep or someone knowledgable. They should point you in the right direction.

I'm looking at painting the hull too. Below the waterline.

I know it will eventually scratch and come off. Thats okay, it will look good for a little while.

I've got a few months before the lake unfreezes, I want to do a nice job.

I'd like to try a base/clear. I've never done it before. Just looking for brands you'd suggest or something you've worked with prior that had a good colour pallet.

ppg, check out http://autoaircolors.com/ its pretty cheap, just go with their base, get a transparent top color and a clear. Its a water based which ive never worked with but I was gonna use that but decided on a ppg line instead.

I painted my blaster with epifanes polyurethane 2 part paint. stuff goes on like rock and is really nice, even after 1 coat. I never cleared it ( doh so many chips now ) but I can imagine the finish would be even better with it. Noah's marine store somwhere in Toronto carries it, $$$

Its a boat, use boat paint. $32, $20 in order. I'm using the Blue Water, its basically the same as Brightside and Easypoxy.

i used polyester primer
with your standard automoive paint in my avitar pic above

i added a flex agent to the clear to try and eliminate cracking, due to hull flex

i think it was sikins(?) primer with house of color paint

I just painted my Superjet with Interlux Perfection. It is the best paint that I ever used. Their web site has real good instructions and the paint is made for the back yard painter. If you are painting white, I would roll it. If you are doing anything darker, spray it.

I like the looks of your ski with Perfection, but what about it under the waterline? Did you use White Perfection under the waterline?

Perfection has a limited colour choice though..

I guess I could mix to get my desired colour although I may not be able to get it right, especially if I go with a colour like a neon that needs to "pop".

Which clear did you pick?

I used white perfection under the waterline and I didn't use any clear. They only have the basic colours.

Kirker has an excellent polyurethane paint that is reasonably priced and goes on very smooth.

Mixing perfection would probably yeild some yucky colors unless you know how to measure it out. It looks good though, my boat thats painted with it has seen 3 seasons of hard use, and it stays in the sun all year round.
