Super Jet 1990 sn 650

Hey all, complete noob here to the stand ups. Had jet skis growing up and we never owned anything other than Yamahas. But never had an opportunity to rock out on a stand up. Been looking around locally to find something to get me started. I’d really prefer a rn 701 but there’s a pretty good deal on a 650 sn. Wondering what my best bet would be to maybe gain a few ponys eventually. Like what’s my best pipe option? Maybe something else like a new head or ?? I see it doesn’t look to bad to drop in a 701 but that would be in the future. Any help is much appreciated thanks!

I started with a 650 sn two years ago and had a blast with it in stock configuration for a few months. My first upgrades were a 9/15 impeller, scoop intake and a ride plate with fins. These were all worthwhile upgrades. I would have been happy forever as far as I was concerned, but a neighbor down the lake had to ensure I take his 09' superjet out for a cruise. Needless to say I put a Coffman sizzler pipe on the 6m6 and it was even better, but it just didn't compare in terms of handling (it wasn't too far behind my neighbors stock 701 in terms of power). I was sold on the handling with the newer hull (09'+) and replaced my SN with a 2015 RN.

I found that I enjoy chasing wakes from time to time, but I mostly carve around buoys. With that being said, the hulls don't compare on a course. The SN is fun, but it turns flat (minimal leaning) and I found it to be pretty unpredictable. I still ride the SN periodically, but I honestly don't miss anything about it.

In conclusion, I'd suggest you enjoy that boat with minimal investment until you figure out what you want out of standup. You can change the handling characteristics with tubbies and a 701 transplant is a piece of cake, but if you decide to go to a rn hull, dont expect much in return for your investment.

Thanks man!! I think you’re right. Maybe just enjoy it for the season and see what I want to do afterwords especially since it’s my first one. The one I’m looking at is 2k which the more I’m looking might not be that great of deal although it is in very good shape. Has a couple mods but nothing to crazy. The 701 however is a 96 rn with a Coffman pipe and is 3500. So idk maybe in the long end that is my best bet. Just didn’t really wanna spend a bunch of $$ right off the bat. Although as we all know in life, you get what ya pay for no matter what the hell it is.

I'm sure you know, but if not, the 90'-07' bottom hulls are all the same meaning they have very similar riding characteristics.

If you are like most of us, you will likely be thinking about modifying before you can even stand up on one. With that being said, you might consider making a compromise on the boats condition if you can find one with tasteful modifications that are installed correctly.

2k is pretty high here in upstate, ny. But I do know people will pay it for a SN hull in unmolested condition.

I have read that the bottoms are the same. And yes you’re correct about that man! Already thinking mods before I even own one haha. Kinda just curious which mods are gonna be the most efficient like handling/power wise and best bang for my buck. This one has been tinkered with for sure. I’m in Michigan and have only found a hand full around me. The 96 701 however is completely stock and unmolested besides the pipe.

I’m in Indiana so pretty familiar with the market in the area so here’s my 2 cents. 2k for a stock 650 is high there’s a few in Indiana 90-91 for that price that’s been for sale for a while. If you can get a good deal on it maybe grab it and find a vxr pro or wr3 gp and swap the 701 into the sj and get your money back out of the sit down with the 650. On the 96 if it has stock graphics and in good shape it might not be a bad deal if you don’t want to spend the $3500 then sell the pipe and your down to 3k or less into it depending on what you pay. A clean 96 should always bring 3k ( some people love the graphics) The sn will be a lot harder to get your money back. I personally like the 08+ hulls

Thanks for the input man much appreciated. Just started looking around the post couples days to see what my options were localish. Only 2 that were worth a damn honestly. And as far as the 650 goes seems like a kid bought and owns it now and knows nothing about it. So that’s a huge downfall in my eyes. Says he can get the info from the guy who “actually” built it but idk bout all dat. I asked him what pipe it had and he had no idea what I was talking about. So unless I can get that for like 1500 or less prolly just gonna pass as it seems more of a headache in the long end with a kid owning it. Nothing against the younger generation at all as some will be a lot more knowledgeable than me but after asking a couple questions I just don’t feel comfortable with it. And obviously that price is way to high
