I need some feedback on a ski I found. It seems to be just what I am looking for at the price I want. here is what I know:
Factory Pipe B pipe,
flame arrestors ,
Skat Trak impeller,
Protec intake grate,
Riva ride plate.
compression is almost exactly 150psi on each cylinder
no stress cracks on the hull
scratches in the paint more than average for the year
no paint on bottom from being beached
turf is crap
temperature sensor wasn't in the head
top B pipe screw was stripped
comes with a Title
asking $3,350
10 hours away

my last ski purchase was a nightmare so I want to make sure I know what I am getting myself into this time. what are your thoughts?

Yeah you should probably talk him down some on the price.

The way I see it you have the following going for you:

-It's a roundnose (In that year it's worth 2500-3500 depending on condition)
-It's got a bpipe (Worth $400)
-It's got an Skat Impeller(But you don't know which one)(Worth about $125)
-Structurally it's solid
-Good Compression

And you have the following going against you:

-It's not in the best of shape and doesn't look like it's been taken care of very well
-Rideplate and intake grate are not that great(You'll eventually want to replace them)
-Skat Impeller might not be not the one you want b/c it could be a top end prop.
-Flame Arrestors add no value to the ski and should be replaced with stock flame arrestors anyways
-Sounds like it doesn't come with a trailer
-It's 10 hours away.

I mean it's not a horrible deal, but it's not a great deal either. Unfortunately it's just going to get harder to find a good deal as the we get closer to spring. I would try and talk him down some and maybe see if he could meet you half way of the driving distance.

By the way I wasn't trying to rag on the ski at all. I was just letting you know that some of the parts it has on it aren't really the best parts to have. They will still work, but I wouldn't include them in the value of the ski and have them affect whether you purchase the ski or not. Like I said it's great that it has a bpipe and Skat Impeller, but ask him exactly what impeller is in it.

Good Luck:biggthumpup:

well the only way your gonna know is seeing up close for yourself. driving 10 hours to look at a ski is pretty crazy. but if you want one that bad and think this is the one go for it. worst thing that happens is you waste 20 hours of driving.

seeing something up close and personal is the only thing that will make up your mind. some one elses description may be better or worse than your expecting.

Dont be afraid of the drive. Drove a hurricane in Sept of 2004 to Ft Walton beach(7 hour drive) to LOOK at my SJ.

My notes

...It has solid compression for a stock boat.
...It has a bpipe and an impeller, who cares what pitch, its better then a stocker
...turf doesnt matter, first thing your gonna need to do is put ins ome footholds and HydroTurf anyway....but its a good bargain point to get it cheaper
...b pipe screws are easily fixed
...temp sensor doesnt matter, 99% of us with aftermarket heads dont run them
...no cracks, good. startches? its gonna get startched up anyway
...all skis will pretty much lose their boat paint sooner or later

Sounds like you got a ski with "problems" that usually happen anyway and dont effect performance or reliability. Perfect for getting it cheaper.

Why buy one with less stratches and all bottom paint for more when its just gonna come off while your riding it later.

I agree with everyone else, sounds a little pricey so get him down 3 or preferably under25-2700 then it will be worth the drive. Heck I flew 1700 miles to buy my 63 Corvette then drove it back home.

Looks like the ski will need to be pulled apart and the bugs cleaned out as with just about any ski at that price.

I just sold a 98 model very low hr. SJ for $3500 to GilWilliams (here on boards), It was in much better shape w/ more mods. But I guess he got a helluva deal huh?
