Lets talk about engines!

Right now my setup is a stock 701 with a b pipe.
My previous superjet was a jet works 701, b pipe, epic, mag etc. it was an animal for a 701.
I'm looking into a 5mil 800ish, 148 mag, c4 chamber, all the bells and whistles... I'd like it to hit hard and pull to 60ish mph. that's the goal atleast. that jet works 701 would hit about 57 mph and was like a rocket all the way there. It was fun in the surf.

I was just curious what others thought about freestyle engines vs free ride engines. If there was a difference in porting or if it's all in the setup.

When I had my stroker built, the conversation related to porting/package was whether I wanted maximum power (extreme porting/compression/timing) or maximum reliability (less of all 3). This was the verbiage rather than freestyle or freeride. I chose reliability as I wanted a setup geared for freeride and less maintenance. I may have left some potential power on the table by doing so but in my case, more time between rebuilds = less money and more riding and having fun. FWIW I loved this setup in a flatwater hull with laydown pipe and really love it in a surf hull with b-pipe. The power delivery changed between the two pipes for sure and it's certainly not necessary in surf but it makes the flat days or days on the river/lake much more enjoyable.

Just curious, do you need to change jets or re-adjust your carbs every time you switch from B pipe to PFP, TNT, or RRP, etc.
I know when going from stock to B pipe there are some adjustments and bigger jets needed but I never knew if there was a need when going form B pipes to lay down pipes

Can't speak for every setup/builder but changing pipes only required minor carb screw adjustments on my engine. Same changes with another buddy's Jetworks ada cylinder 10mil when swapping from b pipe to pfp.

An engine is just an air pump. if you change the way the air leaves the motor you usually gotta change how it goes in

As Spacecowboy said, pick a builder and follow their recipe. After riding his ski, that statement speaks for itself. If your on a budget, judging by what I've heard and what I know from personal experience, I would try one of HPE's motors or a PHP898 for the best bang for your buck and reliability. Power is great, easy to handle, and I've seen people beat those things season after season without any issues.
