Freeriding the Outer Banks ?

My wife's side of the family is planning a trip to rent a beach house in the Outer Banks at the end of Summer 2007.

I have never been down there so I really have no idea what to expect.
Of course the first thing that comes to mind is "Wonder if I can get my ski to the surf ?"

Anyone on here ever go there, and have first-hand experience with the local freeriding scene (any regulations, restricted areas, etc?)?

Looking at the pictures of the beach houses online, it doesn't look like
you can just take your ski out the back door right to the water.
They sit pretty far back. And I don't own a beach cart (no need in the
middle of Ohio). :frown:

Thanks for any info anyone can give me.

I would like to know if you could ride too? I posted this in the east coast competition sticky but we never came up with an answer. May have to make a few phone class to find out.

my parents had a house on the outbeanks since b4 i was born. its illegal to launch watercraft from the beach. i launched from the pier on the sound side when i had my 550.

there is plenty of beach access where you can drive the truck on the sand but there is signs and beach patrol pretty much every where. i think the only place you can launch is from hatteras. if you go north to like corolla the only way to get to some of the houses is in the sand, if you got a house up there and it was offseason you could prob get away with it.

Me and two other friends did an E coast camping/ surf trip to the outer banks in the summer! We took a superjet and a honda F12.
The surf there is AMAZING but unfortunatly the riding situation is not very good. They dont let you launch from anywhere on the island except for the pier. You can deal with it, but it was a pain for us since we had a weird camp setup etc.
We went to Cape Hatteras, the rules may be different on the other islands. You know which one you are going to?

Heres a pic of our rig on the ferry to Hatteras!

Actually, :sneaky: , we couldnt find the ramp so we launched from a beach neer the pier. Shh:rolleyes:
I only rode one day when I was there since it was sketch. I know for sure there is a ramp neer the pier..somewhere. I surfed all the other time. The barrells were just perfect!

Any of you NC OBX folks want to correct me if I'm wrong. Please do so. FYI:I use to 4x4/ski out of Oregon Inlet but NC law makers have lost all mine and several family and friends tourist $. So I hope they read this!

******OCEAN*******************
NC OBX (North side) From Carrolla (VA-NC border) to Oregon Inlet (Dale County) IS NOT PWC FREINDLY!!. There is a written law that there is "No lauching or retriveing PWC from the shore of the Atlantic Ocean in Dale County." That means you can not get to the Ocean, on a PWC, unless you launch from Manteo Island's public ramp and ride 15 miles south in the sound to the Inlet.

South of Oregon Inlet I do not know.

*************Sound/Intercoastal************
PWC use is allowed in the internal waters, your only problem is finding a ramp. There are several private ramps that you can get in the sound: Manteo Island, and a small ramp behind a Fishmarket in Duck, other then that your on your own. The governing body there does not support public ramps above the Manteo Island Bridge.

Sorry, If I'm venting but it pisses me off that there is a PUBLIC ramp(3) 1 mile from the Inlet (old Coast Guard Station), but there is a $500 fine if you lauch a PWC. As far as I know, the AWA has never done anything to validate how the exclude PWC's from a public ramp.

As far as a pier. I do not know of any...

only problem with oregon inlet is there is soo much water going through there its dangerous.

my father and i fished on our boat through the inlet for a few years and let me tell you its a white knuckle ride through there every time.

best bet is to go offseason and go north to corolla and get a house there and launch from the beach.

doh,Mark beat me too it,A pontoon with 4 superjets tied to the deck is the way to stick your finger right up at them................and take the boat out till you find the perfect spot and toss em in.

Well, I just checked a map and VA beach is only an hour away from
where we would be staying. Since riding at OBX looks like it is going to
suck, if you guys are going to be doing any riding at VA Beach the week of September 15-22nd, let me know. My brother-in-law and I will make an escape from the family vacation and take a day-trip up north to ride some surf with
the WaveJunkies.

I met a few of the VA Beach crew at the 2005 Jersey Rager. Sorry,
I can't remember names, but someone had brought a 3D and was letting
me take a spin on it in the surf. :)

I sent an email to AWA with a copy of this forum and this is what I got back...

There are over 3000 counties in the U.S. There is no possible way AWA can
know every county law. We depend greatly on our members to bring things
like this to our attention.

Now that we know about it, we can look into to setting things right. Are we
talking about Dare County? Where is this "written law?" What jurisdiction?

As you know, we just cracked back open Cape Lookout last year.

Let me point out that we're a small organization with only three guys doing
everything. Our problem is membership: It's a simple numbers game, I only
have one guy dedicated to political action, and he also does magazine stuff,
membership, and safety outreach. It's all I can afford, and still be able to
make sure there even is an AWA.

As we speak, that guy is heading to Helena, Montana to fight a total two
stroke ban being proposed in the state.

Thanks for bringing this up. Now that we know, we'll look into what can be
done. Any help you can offer in the form of where to look and who has this
"law" would be very helpful.

Even more helpful would be a heap of riders stepping up and joining the AWA.
Then maybe I could hire an extra guy to help out on state and local issues.
I've been requesting such a position for two years, however, the money just
isn't there.

We'll look into it. Again, thank you for bringing this up. We need your help
to alert us to such things.

Just figured I'd share it back to the thread.
