From the Watercraft Journal 3/22/15
Yamaha Motor USA announced today that they are reviewing the possibility of remaking the now-beloved FX-1 stand up style jet ski. The original launch of the watercraft had the most unfortunate timing in an era when most enthusiasts were race focused. It was no match on the course for the already popular Superjet and Kawasaki’s introduction of the 750sx put the nail in the coffin for a design that seemed to be an utter flop. However, over time the trend in the sport has gradually changed with an increasing amount of individuals trending toward the freestyle scene. The change of heart has led to an overwhelming popularity of the FX-1 and a cult like following where demand is high and supply is low. Yamaha Motor USA believes that now is the time to meet that demand. Plaguing the re-release is a slew of EPA regulations. Navigating the waters of the new laws will be difficult, but Yamaha is likely to follow the same path as they did with the Superjet. Imperative to taking that path is agreeing to make no changes to the original design allowing them to take advantage of the “Grandfather clause”. This means that enthusiasts will still need to look to aftermarket options to solve the obvious issues of tray and pump size, but Yamaha thinks the jet ski world will welcome the FX-1 back with excitement despite its shortcomings. Stay tuned for more updates on the tentative 2016 release.
