1. What year did Yamaha come out with the FX-1?
2. Was there a year that both the FX-1 and the SuperJet were produced?
3. What killed the FX-1's pole style or was it simply integration into the rest of the body?
4. Why SuperJet and not FX-2?
5. What are the strengths/weaknesses of the FX vs. the SJ?

Thank you very much, I greatly appreciate the insight.

The SuperJet was first, I believe. The narrowness of the ski (like the 550) might be the reason for its demise.

1990 was the first year for the SJ.
1994 and 1995 were the only years for the FX-1
The FX-1 and SJ were made consecutively.

1. I think the fx1 was only produced for two years 94-95.
4. Skis were all getting bigger and easier to ride. The fx1 was small and hard to ride.
5. Strengths: small hull with the 701 made for a fast and light ski.
Weakness: narrow hull was harder to ride than the superjet and the small pump limited the amount of power you could put to the water

There are different ideas out there as to why Yamaha produced the fx1.

Some say that Scott Watkins (Yamaha employee) pushed hard for production of the fx1 since he was a big freestyle/freeride guy and had rode Kaw 550's a lot. If you notice the fx1 and 550 are almost identical in size but the 701 is a much better motor.

Other people think that Yamaha produced the fx1 to help in racing. Back in the day slalom was part of the points the win the championship. The Kaw 750 was better at slalom than the superjet so riders like Chris Mac used to run the fx1 in slalom and race the superjet in closed course.

Who really knows.

'94 and '95 for the FX1. The high pivot was to allow it to be thrown around better (I'm still trying to figure out why people use a lowered pivot and it's supposed advantage??).

It cracks me up to hear people say the FX is too hard to ride and then see them tuck their little feets into some holes and pull a BR or BF on something heavier and wider. If you can master BR & BF, why can't you learn to ride a ski that's more nimble?? Since when do freeriders need something "easy" to ride:nutkick:

Not trying to start sh*t, just an old fart trying to understand "new school"??

IMO, the timing was all wrong for the FX-1, early & mid 90's racing was huge. Had the came out before then or well after they would have done much better. But they came out during a race crave, and we know the FX-1 is no race hull.

I'd guess bad timing (most standup models went away in the mid 90's) and maybe lack of marketing. The style was fine IMO, especially compared to the 550 (which it was probably made to compete with). The pump does suck by today's standards, but back then, for a recreational rider, it would have been fine. The purple gelcoat also sucks by today's standards, but back then purple was cool
