Scoop Or Standard Grate

Just curious about whether a scoop style grate is good for flatwater style riding. I know they can improve high speed/choppy water hook up at speed. But since that scoop is there does it affect the pump hook up upon landing back in the water at lower speeds since the water is not being fed into the pump as quick? Not sure I'm explaining what I'm getting at correctly, but to me it seems at low speed the scoop could almost be a hindrance since the water has to pass around it as slower speeds?

A scoop grate feeds the water directly towards the prop when you hit the water(instant hookup) or move at slow speeds . I don't see how you think the water has to pass around the scoop grate, rather the water follows the path of the scoop hence the term "scoop", because it scoops the water right into the prop.. . It's not a hindrance at all, at least in my experience. Standard grates suck for pump hookup, except I have heard of one person saying they prefer it in the surf because it allows them to slide easier on a wave.. But that's the only time I've heard that.
Get a scoop grate and never look back. The new hurricanes have a permanently molded scoop modded into there pump tunnel, so there's a freestyle example for you. I believe some other hulls have that too.

Which is good in perfect flat water circumstances for sliding around yeah. IMO, you should try no grate at all or a two bar grate(stock sucks, but you can just cut the bars out rather than buying a two bar grate) . Or try a scoop grate. I do freestyle and I loved my toploader but sometimes wanted a more aggressive grate so now I've got a worx 201. Even for small waves from the wind, that extra hookup from a scoop is extremely noticeable and a must IMO.

I understand the theory behind the grate, and I am currently running one. My point was that with the scoop there is less water volume passes through the pump cavity since the scoop was there, especially at low speed when it's not being fed as quickly. Because the only time it's "scooping" is during forward motion. I've noticed my ski had a bit of cavitation for a slight second upon re entering the water, so wasn't sure is that had anything to do with it, or if it was simply that it's just the time it takes to load the pump up when re entering the water. For instance with the pic below (not my ski I have a single), the scoops take up a lot of room, and to me it seems at low speed it could almost hinder the water that is traveling upward into the pump cavity. In a straight line, sure it helps stay hooked and scoop water into the pump, but what about a flat water ski that is constantly leaving and re entering the water at low speeds.

The Hurricanes don't have that any longer.

To the OP: try a stock grate once and you'll know its so much better with a scoop.

Yeah figured so, was just something I thought about as most say they give you better straight line hookup. So was curious about low speed stuff etc

My bad, I just remember seeing a video of the hurricane and I remember them having that. Didn't know they changed it.

Depends on the ski as well...I have a scoop on my SJ and love it. I preferred no grate or a cut up stock grate when I had my X2.
