650/X-2 West coast head and gasket question

Whenever I get a westcoast head with domes in it I pull the domes out and clean everything. Usually the domes get corroded and the o'rings by the spark plugs can go bad.

Yup first thing i did had to press them out they they were corroded in so clean them all up and replaced both orings and put a tad bit of o-ring lube on there

I'm a hillbilly and have ran a stock gasket with my Westcoast head on a 650 for 2 years without issue. I have read that the 800 gasket works, but haven't seen it done. I'll be interested to see how it works.

the westcoast gasket only seals the water jacket and thats it. the o-rings seal the compression on top of the sleeves. if you put a regular gasket that sits between the o-rings and the cylinder, there is no reason for the o-rings. hillbilly it if you want to, but unlike others, i dont give advice when i dont know what the hell i'm talking about. that extra .010 under the domes can crack the head shell when you smash the outside edge down to make the water jacket seal.

Correct , but you said it wouldnt work. It does work. Works just fine. Which means you dont know what your talking about. Im willing to bet you've never tried a stock gasket .... or else you would have seen it worked. So how can you say it wont. Or doesnt.

Superjets didnt come rockered , I wonder if its hillbilly to cut the nose off and rocker them.

Westcoast also sold kawi 650 and 750 domes without the o'ring channel. I have a set. I wonder why.

Over the many years Ive told people to just use the stock 650 gasket not one person has jumped into these similar threads and said "I tried it and it didnt work" ...... Only people who havent tried giving thier two cents and calling people who try names . I guess every new invention is hillbilly.

you can wipe your ass with your hand instead of TP. that works too, right? you can run the flywheel bolt on there with an impact and no locktite.thats works too, right? afro engineering works sometimes, but it aint the way its supposed to be done. and if its done any other way than correctly, it can come back and bite you. i guess everybody on here needs a shade tree mechanic to give them options on what supposedly works, when they refuse to do it right.

First of all Id reach for a tree leaf , you can use your hand. Second of all its a head gasket , we arent fitting a seadoo head onto a yami. Relax. If you havent tried it dont go telling people it wont work when its been done more times than youve farted and hasnt failed yet. So stop confusing the snake.

You know how many times people in this industry have done things you would say are hillbilly that have stuck and actually changed the industry for the better? I bet the list is huge.

You know people have been making gaskets by hand since .... forever. They sell gasket making kits at the automotive store and on the package it doesnt say "hillbilly Gasket Kit". I think Tim Judge hand makes his own base gaskets for some of his work. Is Tim Judge "hillbilly"?

Is the snake confused on who to strike? lol.

when the guy thats dead nuts WRONG , tells me i dont know what i'm talking about and tells me i'm incorrect, that provokes a strike. use a 650 gasket, i couldnt care less. at least i give correct info to those that ask questions and not try and shove some hillbilly fix down their throat. if the OP wants my hillbilly fix, hog out the sxr800 stock gasket so it clears the westcoast domes completely. its going to have to be opened up to 89mm to clear.

There is no doubt that the WC head was designed to be used with the WC gasket, but the stock gasket only adds .25mm of thickness across the entire mating surface. You would think that the oring could absorb this additional height without substantially increasing the risk of cracking the head. I'll take my chances.

On a side note: I know Stupid Couchers has a few of the correct gaskets, but Gordy is out.

If you use the 800 gasket you'll also have to hog out waterjacket holes like he did on the 750 gasket. Or just use a 650 gasket and do nothing but goop it and torque it and be done. Or widen the bore size on the 650 gasket and not have to touch the waterjacket holes, or not , doesnt matter , works iether way. Surf and race tested and approved.

And explain to me how Im dead nuts wrong.

I have made these POS heads seal on 650-750s, they are easier on 650s but a real challenge on 750s. The problem is that the dome surfaces get either worn, scratched, or dented making them impossible to seal. You will know when the pisser stream is not steady. An easy fix is using two stock 650 gaskets with one cut to clear the domes. This also provides more clamping force to the dome because the Kawasaki gasket is thinner than the Westcoast. Since you already have an 800 gasket, cut it to clear the dome and use a 650 gasket under them. Just elongate the coolant holes to match the head, they dont have to be perfect.

If you still get an unsteady pisser stream, add a stock 650 gasket under the whole Westcoast setup.
