Log Jump

This video got me thinking.

Jet ski racing is stuck in the past. Log/tire jump? No! it's an obstacle and not a very interesting one at that. How about some thing like this.

With 4-6, hull width channels (imagine the ruts in a supercross jump) and topped with some rubber or foam or something to cushion the hulls, then have a pond pump to keep it wet. I'd even like to see a landing ramp to get the "double jump" effect, something like this. it's an air bag covered in plastic or vinyl.

Ramps are very dangerous in racing, and also destructive. Up in Wisconsin they had a ramp that was tubular in design, this would keep the ski somewhat tracking straight, but if you hit it crooked then you were in for a ride. Same with regular ramps, you hit them crooked and you go for a swim, that is not so bad, what is bad is when someone lands on you.

The idea is great, it would add some excitement, but not practical.

Well I guess ski racing is still not ready to advance :sad2: maybe in another decade it'll be exciting to watch.

El Joker, I wasn't thinking about extended scoop grates dragging but they could be taken away to make to show better.

Big Kahuna, the same dangers exist in supercross. Would you watch supercross without jumps?

txsuperjetfreak96, If everyone has to catch air then it's all equal.

its not about the show or the spectators, its about lap times. if you want a show, just wait for the freestyle to come up.

when you go up a jump in Supercross your wheels are touching the ground and your drive system is still working until the second you leave the dirt. On a ramp on a ski, none of these work, you cannot steer or anything.

There have been races with some smaller jumps, those were interesting, but they cause damage to the ski's. There is no suspension to soak up the hits like that of a YZF450. The Log Jumps are the most practical, but they are more of an obstacle than a jump. To bad I never got to go over them, they started to not be used around 2000 except at the WF.

So true about not having any power off the face, but it doesn't seem to be a problem in that video I posted. He started to yaw out, which could've been caused by no drive off the lip or could've been caused by lack of channels on the face. Damage to the hull is a problem with this style jump but there has to be some thing that would work. Maybe design it like these standing waves.

they did something like that at Jet Jam, back in '96 or '97 in Anaheim. They had a split course and one side went off a ramp jump.

edit...found a video

And those races were the coolest ski races ever! I remember when that happened. I thought jet ski racing was gonna be huge after those races.

skeeter nice video if only the local race turn out looked like that.

I tell people i ride and race stand-ups everyone looks at me like "that even exist" its vary sad.

I have raced the CanAm Cup a few times, and they used both logs and a ramp. The ramp would compress a bit when you hit it and 2 skis could go at one time. Definitely made things more interesting especially like Big Kahuna said, if you were crooked coming in look out because you would just keep spinning sideways as you came off the ramp. Pretty fun racing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxkKBU1PV98
