Zzylstra nailed it. The amount of air and fuel don't change. You are simply squeezing them tighter, creating a more violent (reactive) explosion, resulting in more downward force on the piston. Jetting typically won't need to be changed. Timing, plug heat range, and octane, however, may need adjusting.

I had a new set of Wisecos that stayed shiny for three rides with the jetting fairly clean at part throttle and a few RPM rich of peak at full throttle. After a 5 min full throttle run across the lake the centers turned brown. So what did piston wash tell me? Not a damn thing, I tuned the carbs perfectly on the first ride.

Any kind of water getting into the motor can steam clean the pistons. Common with head gasket or exhaust leaks.

yip any water will make it look brand new
on my race car i inject a mixture of water meth to up the octane and cool the boost charge
took my motor apart and it looked newer than when i put it togther no carbon build up at all
