Dude, dont do what i did. I picked up a 650sx two years ago and just recently gave up and sold it. From my limited experience, if you buy a kawasaki you'll be wrenching on it more than riding it. Maybe i just got a lemon, but others seem to have had similar experiences. get a superjet. The engines are bullet proof. you might want to find an unmolested stock one....or maybe you'll want to save time and money and get a modded one. Personally i just recently went with stock for now. My skills dont warrant mods...YET ha ha ha. Rumor has it that you wont be able to get a superjet in the next couple years (they may stop offering them in the states thanks to the good ol' EPA). I personally doubt that this is true but why risk it? IF you love the sport just go buy brand new. Its not like its going to depreciate. if you get tired of it just sell it for what you paid lol. At least that's the distorted logic I'm using to justify my purchse.

650sx was a great ski. My 1st. Tons of problems but that had nothing to do with Kawasaki. I bought old and busted for $800, and what I got was cheap entry into a sport, which is how I met my 1st riders, who sent me here, where I have learned a lot since.

I bought a cheap ski because I was broke and needed to get in cheap. My only regret was that I bought something so worn out. The 650sx was a fun ride, it just was worn out and poorly maintained. How much can you expect after 14 years of abuse? I'd recommend a 650sx to any new rider, but only if it were clean, well maintained and ready to ride.

I ride with Yamaha and kawi guys. The Yamaha guys turn just as many wrenches as the kawi guys. The guys with 5yewr old SXRs don't turn wrenches and neither do I, but we all have problems, like my recent carb rebuilds on my sj.

Kawi get a bad wrap because they are older and abused. People don't restore 650sx, they sell it cheap and buy a sxr. Kawi doesn't break more, it's because they innovate better designs, the old ones go to the wayside and people buy new designs. A fair comparison would be the 650sn. Not too many of those running strong anymore. They don't get restored, they get replaced.

I don't care the brand. Condition is the deciding factor for a 1st ski. I'd take a clean sx over a beat sj (assuming appropriate market pricing.) now, if take the beat sj, but for a first ski... Condition, condition, condition. There's no part that out performs seat time.
