round pole on a square......

im not sure if there has been any threads on this site about this, so i thought id ask.....

i want to put a round stocker pole on a square..... can i still use the square bracket? it will have springs instead of being stiff. i know pete j was selling some that were being fabricated for or by him, but im curious about using a stock SN bracket. anyone?

I know someone's done it. That person posted that he had to use washers/spacers of some sort to make it fit right (since the square bracket is wider than the roundnose pole).
I am going to put a round pole (FX1 actually) on my wife's square - but I am using an XMW bracket.

i figured that id have to use some washers for spacers. are the pivot bolts the same diameter? does everything clear properly when the pole is raised and lowered?

In most cases, it seems that the pole will not come up as much as the stock square pole does. I believe this can be fixed by some creative "convincing".
I think the pole bolts are the same diameter - not sure though.

it works but not vey well. Since the RN bracket sits at an angel and the SN bracket mounts more level the HP stop will catch the pole a little more that 1/2 way extended so you can't get the pole all the way up.

Removing the HP stop should alleviate this though, right?:dunno:

I just mounted a stock RN bracket on a SN w/ stock RN pole. I milled the bottom of the stock RN bracket down about 3/4" otherwise it sits too high. If I had to do over again I would mill at an angle to make bracket stand straight off angled hull. The best Bracket for the conversion I have found though was a Wammer RN lowered bracket. I have another stock RN bracket laying arround I may go ahead and mill it at an angle and try it out too. I wonder if filling the hollow stock RN bracket w/ epoxy or something would improve strength????

I was thinking that very thing last night while looking at the stock RN bracket.

You would have to re-drill and tap new holes for the studs...

The pivot bolts are both 14mm. I tried using a round pole with the square bracket, and it hits the bottom of the square bracket when you try to lift the pole up. I just used the round bracket, redrilled the holes in the hull, and made an aluminum backing plate. It doesn't come up as far as the square pole, but it comes up far enough.

Not bagging on anyone's conversion bracket - but the XMW bracket is probably the cheapest (aftermarket) way to do this.

I agree.
I did the conversion with a stock height UMI bracket and ran into the same problem with the pole stops keeping it from extending all the way due to the angle of the mounting area. I just slapped a limiting strap on it and called it a day. One other thing that might be worth mentioning is that if you go with a roundnose bracket you'll need roundnose hood hooks.

I was the one that put a RN pole on a SN with a SN bracket as well. I used a combo os aluminum and nylon washers and everything worked smooth down there. I ground down a lot the bottom of the pole to make it come up higher but it was still not quite as high as I liked. It worked for the last 4-5 rides of the season riding surf but if ya got the money and time might as well do it right. Im doing another buildup of the same ski this fall and spring, and I may throw it back on or get a good bracket from someone.

I re-used my square hood hooks, just moved them to the sides.

and a bit of grinding on the end of the pole will raise it up enough.

If I had it to do over, Id mill the bracket bottom at an angle, OR glass a wedge into the mounting area.

Mouth, did you use a stock bracket? Do you have any side photos?

I'm worried about the pole sitting too high, so of like an FX1...

why did you have to move the hooks out?

the hooks on the square mount inside the bracket, rn hooks mount on the outside of the bracket.

i understand that, but if hes using a square hood and a square bracket, why move the hooks? im sure theres a valid reason. im just curious as to what it is.

is it because the pole is too narrow and hits the hooks?
