ive had 2 snowmobile and 1 pwc motor go down with amsoil.... thats where my amsoil use stopped. there 2 stroke oil is junk! stay away from it! ive had multiple engine builders tell me there would be no warrenty if i used amsoil. kind of a bummer really cuz there factory is 20mi from my house.

Interesting.

I happen to know that Art Gomez (well known engine builder) recommends ONLY Amsoil Dominator. :dunno:

Strange, I have used Amsoil since about 2000 in all my moto bikes, snowmobiles, jet skis and even my fathers 600+ nitrous assisted v8 two stroke out board. Never have had an oil related failure. Only problem with dominator is that it is not a good oil for storage, which is clearly stated on the jug.

Yamalube is as good as any oil I'm sure, tons of people use it.

Walmart supertec 10 bucks a gallon

Quicksilver at walmart 25-30 a gallon

Yamalube 30-40 depending on dealer

Synthetics??? 40-60+

Different ratios of mix for everyone so lets say abouts 40:1? Thats 8 tanks in a stock sj. A tank prob last 1-4 hrs, depending on rider. 8-32 hrs of riding per gallon of mix. Most 701s prob see 2-400+ hrs of use before something bites the dust. Around 20 gallons of mix per engine is what it boils down to for most people. A Pro x topend kit with gaskets is 200 bucks, and its 25 bucks a hole to bore cylinders.

If you do the math its more cost efficient to buy cheap oil, for me anyways, unless some reason the "good" oil gives more power. Theres a whole bunch of oil debates on here. I dont have a super pumped up engine, but I DO put more hours on my ski than anyone I know, and still have yet to have a oil failure. A built 900cc dasa engine with some crazy pipe and porting will prob want synthetic, but I wouldnt bat an eye at any oil myself.

On a side note, again I bring it up, Walmart supertec is EXTREMELY similar to Yamalube. They smell the same, look the same, burn the same out the pipe, and everyone at our dealer thinks they are the same thing. There are only so many oil manufacturers. Just my opinion on the subject.

I run Yamalube, not a clue why but its around and 32/gal at the dealer locally. Had 400+ hrs on my stock 701 with it before a preventative rebuild. little corrosion/pitting on one main brg and pitting on a rod. Still run it in my PV DASA but only have 10 hrs on it. it is sludgy though.

Really curious to see why your mechanic would advise against the usage of amsoil.

Our family business for the past 30 years is an oil change in the Chicago area and even though we are not an amsoil dealer I agree that it is probably amongst the top oils out there. Actually, whenever you got to purchase bottled oil, amsoil is more than likely to be the only FULL synthetic on the shelf. Most oils say full synthetic on the bottle but in reality they are lucky to be anything over half synthetic. Says a lot about the company.

With that being said I won't tell you that any top mainstream oils are bad because the differences are minimal and they all do their job for the most part. I used to run Yamalube and Pennzoil in my old 91 650 SN and now this time around for my 701 SN I have been using Maxima. It's good oil and a good price. Plus they sell it really close to me. To reiterate what Sparkplug said above, you only get a certain amount of hours with these two stroke motors until a rebuild is probably necessary. Heck, if I had the cash I would probably run Klotz or amsoil in my ski to try and squeeze a bit more life out of the engine but I don't so I use a reasonably good oil instead. I really can't see the oil being the problem in your situation without a more factual argument. I won't go into any further detail on that topic, not my business.

However I will say that running a no name oil or walmart brand oil is probably not the best idea. I have seen some nasty oil related problems in the past and even though the difference in engine longevity between a synthetic and good oil is not necessarily drastic (for the normal-mildly modified engine), the difference between using a junk oil and a good one is.

And to answer the OP's original question - If I could get it at that price, I'd probably do it. If I were a mfg I wouldn't put some b.s. oil out for my engines. Just saying.

http://www.2strokeheads.com/ <- did 1 of my sled motors said no amsoil, anything but it actually. here is a link on his website - http://www.2strokeheads.com/OIL-TECH.htm

other one was stealth performance out of wisconsin some where? eagle river maybe? my cousin had a motor is his 700 yami mountain max go down as well on amsoil and was told by his builder not to use it. he did a test with oils and foun that amsoil when it go hot moved away from the heat source much sooner thatn any other oil it also got extremely thin, this was both dominator and intimidator or whatever they call it. and in his testing the walmart oil was almost as good as klotz, so close actually he said save yourself $15-20 a gallon and use that instead lol.

my cousins sled and mine with motor from the link above both were used in hill drags and out west hill climbing and without amsoil were fantastic. my sled made it 5800 hard miles tell a ring finaly started to fail.

And on a side note i had an 04 srt-4 with 550+hp/tq and was told by my engine builder not to use a full synthetic either, and ive heard the same thing from turbo manufacturers (sp?) as well. and for my new sled i was told by the dealer to only use semi synthetic in that as well.

im not any kind of oil perfesional im just going off my experiances and what ive been told.

Yamalube 30-40 depending on dealer

Yamalube is actually 15 bucks by the gallon at my local dealer. Not too many people (even employees) know that most dealers sell it also by the gallon for half the price. We have noticed that Yamalube burns good and leaves dry residue on the exhaust. It smell awful though either before or after the exhaust..

I've been riding yamaha's since i was 5 years old (dirtbikes) and the only oil I have used in all of my 2 stroke yamaha's (to include a GP 1300r and RN SJ) since then was yamalube. Never had a problem due to oil failure...rider failure yes..oil failure never.
