Other 61x... opinion?

I'm finishing up a build on my 650sx at the moment, and will be done with school in a month and starting a new build. Wanted to try out a yamaha powerplant. There's a 61x on craigslist right for a good deal ($300) will i regret setting up a 61x rather than a 62t? For $300 ill assume i need a new top end but crank and everything is good (obviously ill do my best to check it out if i go to look at it.) it's also 2 hours away from me... worth it?

my other option is setting up a fully worked 750 which i already have engine, exhaust, ada head. (would just get it ported with a couple other small things added on) and putting a 650 back in my 650sx.

The 61x is a great motor. The reason for swapping to 62t cases is to run dual carbs. The port timing on the 61x cases makes more bottom end power. Ideally the combination of the two is the most desirable setup (in a 701). I believe that you will find that a 61x makes plenty of power and is reliable as well. At the price you quoted it sounds like a good deal to me.

yea, i want to pull the trigger on it. If it were closer i would probably be more willing. Last engine i got off craigslist clearly had water in, crank ended up being fine and i just honed it but would have been a bad purchase if i had to spend 250 to rebuild a crank. i feel like people pull motors and put them on craigslist because something went wrong with the engine.

Most used PWC parts are garbage.

I run a ported 61x motor with dual carbs (R&D intake), and it hits hard. I have a 62t/61x motor as well but I like the way the 61x runs. As fars as electronics they are different but you can run either or as long as you keep the flywheel and stator together.

I bought a complete running 61x last winter from a forum member for $350 shipped, so if it needs work thats a little steep. The 61x/61x motors can be had for much cheaper than the 62t/61x motors. Its alot cheaper to build up a 61x, cheaper reeds, intakes, and such. I plan on dropping a full 61x motor in my 650 sj soon. Theres nothing wrong with them.

The port timing on the 61x cases makes more bottom end power.

The cases have nothing to do with port timing. Port timing is determined by the placement of the ports in the cylinder. The biggest advantage of the 62t cases whether running single or dual carb setup is the intake air angle in relation to the crank. You can make good power with a 61x/61x but the 62t cases have much better airflow potential.

here are some pics the guy sent me. It's a little rough and the one piston clearly had some deto. what do you guys think? for $300 i don't mind getting a fresh bore and pistons... as long as the crank is good.

I run a ported 61x/61x motor with a wetjet manifold. Easy to tune a single carb and seems to hit just as good as my friends' 61x/62T. For $300 Are you just getting the shortblock or are you getting other goodies like the ebox/stator/intake/carbs? If you are willing to pay for the bore and pistons I would send the cylinder off to Jetmainiac and get it ported as well.

I was just looking at the jet maniac page. It's definitely something I would think about. For 300 it has stator, flywheel, bendix, I believe exhaust as well but I plan on getting a b pipe. He said he has an intake, I'm checking to see if it's for a mikuni 44. I'm new to yamis, what is the stock exhaust setup?

I love the 61x platform myself. I've built all the way up to a ss865 and it is the smoothest, easiest to tune package I've dealt with to date.
