Possible Superjet Build?

Hey Everyone,

I have a Superjet 650 that is completely stock (except bilge pumps). I purchased this ski for $600. It runs fantastic with great compression and everything is spotless in the engine compartment. Unfortunately the outside could use allittle help. Structurally its great (except for some cracked fiberglass on the front bumper) the paint and stickers are just marginal. I bought this ski to learn how to ride and get my fundamentals down. First off I am getting into freestyle and I am wondering what I am not able to do freestyle wise because i have a stock 650. I am very comfortable while riding. I can do tailspins, stab 180, and fountains that kind of stuff. But im wanting to take it to the next level. Is the 701 a necessity for that? What am I missing out on because I have a 650. Basically I am trying to decide what is my best option financially. I want a pure freestyle machine when Im done with my build. So should I start with my squarenose 650, reinforce it, paint it, scupper valves, and drop a 701 in with all the goodies, Or would it be better to start with the round nose 701. Money is a big factor in this project. But i want to do it right. I want to create a machine that is worthy taking to the ocean and riding with everyone else, without spending tons and tons of money. I have done work like this before just I have no experience with fiberglass or paint. I did a complete transformation on a Kawasaki sit-down. Hull to hull transfer on everything and everything turned out great. I just don’t have much knowledge on the reinforcement and painting and all that. $600 for a running square?!?!?!?! That's a hell of a deal.

I got lucky with my sn also. I was given it since it took up room in a friends garage. It was not running but had a coffman's pipe, prop, and structurally sound. All I did was throw a new sbn carb ($75 ebay)and bendix ($120) and it was ready to go.

total now I have about $700 into it. Including a msd cdi, msd coil (both $180 ebay), ac aluminum pole, full aluminum steering, bars, ($225 ebay),and paint, new turf and stuff.

The thing runs like a champ and the power feels like my nephew's stock 2003 RN. Also it handles great in the surf.

I too am thinking about moving up to a 701 b-pipe and all. Just to have more power. Sometimes after huge hits it does not start planing right away. I then get clobbered by the next wave.

One of the main reasons that freestyle is expensive is b/c you need power, strength and light weight. Check out the work I did on my squarenose (link below)

Hull

Modify hood liner asap
footholds
d-cut cut ride plate
reinforcement

Motor

Start by buying parts that will transfer over to a 701 motor:

Carbs, msd enhancer, ada head shell, impeller.

From there I would start looking into a 701 motor but you will now have good parts that will compliment a 701.

Build up you SN. You can do everything on a SN that you can do on a RN. You can save some money going the way also. You can find all the info you need right here on this site....search first though......quickest way to get info.

There isn't a single trick you can't do on a squarenose. They just look different, and it's harder to get a high quality hood, that's all.

Freestyleriverrat has the nicest square I've ever ridden, and right now it's more capable than my round is. Read through his thread to get some ideas of where to go. Last year he had a 650 in it, this year a Lamey powervalve beast.

That's SO true!
Good thing is that the stock squarenose hoods are very easy to modify since they are...well square.

a year ago i bought a 650 superjet that was a pos...learned to love riding and now i have a 550sx, superjet, and an x2. Youll get more into riding i can almost gaurentee it. Right now im in the middle of refoaming/painting the hull and doing the yamaslut hood mod with my own little changes. Im reinforcing the hull and going the whole nine yards. ITS FUN! Im loving working on my ski and i cant wait till next year. Ive learned so much about painting and prep work also. To me its really worth it...ofcourse i didnt see where you were from. Im from MI where you cant ride for 6 months so its nice to have something to do other than homework.

ps...also, fiberglassing is cake...i learned from reading on the internet.
