One handed surf riding

Ive been dragging a hand in the faces of the waves for years but after watching a few of your vids Stanton ive also tried riding one handed a few times...I must say you make it look easy lol...But it is fun and challanging when you get it rite.

And just for the record i can make 5 turns on one wave and land most of my tricks back in front or on the wave.

A different thing: there was one guy in from Aussie while I was visiting O-side last, I can not recall his name, nice guy though. He was doing tight little 360’s back to back on the face of a wave (the same wave), just playing around. Hard to describe, but he wouldn’t leave the face as he was doing them. Serlin and LBE were there, and when I mentioned it afterwards, they could not understand what I was describing, until the guy explained it (they did not see it). I recall Mike being rather surprised by the description. It was fun looking as well as graceful, and rather unique; I have not seen anyone else do it (surf was huge). John was there that day, so he might recall who the guys were.

(when did you two start harshing on each other so badly?)

Lol

I was actually gonna bite my tounge on this one and let u have your 5min of glory but then bearclaw posted and I couldn't resist. U had to have known u were gonna catch some flack for this one..u always see me shaking my head in disgust when u are doing your cool "surfer turns"....

Anyways, back to your regularly scheduled thread content of Stan posting 800 1mb photos, overuse of the word "bro" and poor advise..I have to finish sharpening my foot pegs on my dirt bike..

But stan don't forget to bring a 14mm to the beach Next time so we can take your pipe off..sometimes I forget to trow mine in the toolbox.

Saw the Franenstein fx1 (is that specialfx1) at the last ride I was at.....he was soooooooooo damn good surf riding...one handed everything...only using his hand to trigger the throttle. Everything with his feet......very inspiring riding. Shredding under the wave half the time and just super fast turns all over the wave, re-entrys, you name it.

AND all this on a tiny little fx1 that makes a superjet feel like a 3 seater. I would need a nap after about 3 minutes.

one handed is a little tough to get the hang of. I try it to keep from being bored on the long ride out to the ride area. right about the time Im feeling pretty good and think Im getting comfortable I will hit a ripple and get panicky and grab with the other hand. not sure what you guys have for power but I am also having a tough time with throttle acceleration and deceleration with that scoop grate. I have tried to get some speed and its just a little more than I was prepared for and so I get off center and then let off and fall or nearly fall on the hood. I just know its impressive to watch MY one handed style lol. its a challenging skill for sure.

its all clicks and buzzes from over here, Suzi. :pancake:

Do not do that then! :silly:

Joe = Joe B

I do not find balance difficult with one hand at all, but it does hurt my traps if I do it for seriously extended periods, being that I have issues with my traps (that is why spas are awesome). I do like it for photos, because body position is something I am always looking for when shooting; the more extreme and extended the better. The same old same old, well gets really old, so a little variety helps. I would still snap a rider coming in with no hands, riding the wave out as if on a board, as opposed to someone in a one-handed turn…

Been diggin' the one-handed riding for a long time. It truly makes you a better rider overall. It really makes you have your weight in the right spots at all times, especially without holds or straps (I mean no offense by this!).

Cutbacks, bottom turns, re-entries, and stabs are all fun one-handed. Also do a lot of high speed flat water carving one-handed.

Riding one handed in the surf on a FX1!!!!!:notworthy::notworthy::notworthy:

Joe B, Specialfx, and Wavehog ride better with one hand than I do with both. I'm fortunate to have met these guys when I did. I feel like every time we ride I'm going to school. I get pumped. Specially Joe B with all the wacky crap he comes up with. It's like Daytona every time we ride I see new things. Hats off gentleman

Back to the discussion at hand.......

I DO think it is easier to ride one handed goofy foot forward. Right turns in either regular or goofy are no problem. However it seems like in goofy stance with your right shoulder forward it makes it much easier to get your body and handle bars in the correct position to go left. Wavehog (carl) does an awsome job one handed yet stands regular surf stance. So it can be done just requires a little more skill.

As far as one handed riding being later in a riders natural progression of skill, i DO NOT agree. I believe a less experienced rider can def benefit from a period of riding one handed every time they go out. It REALLY helps (as someone else mentioned) you get your feet and body positioning in the correct place. Which in turn will help a ton even when you put the other hand back on.

wow, I guess I'm a kook too.. God knows a couple guys in California make all the freeride rules and regulations. Hey, can I get a list of what is acceptable riding so I'm not the "that guy"..
