Is it my bendix?

My jetski died as I was driving it onto my lift and wouldnt turn over. Popped off the hood and hit the start button, heard a clicking noise then my starter just spun without turning over the motor :banghead: I assume its my bendix is this true?

If so I know there is a way to free it up but I dont want this to happen again in the middle of the lake and I can afford a new one. Would that be the best route? Also I was looking at DK catelog (live an hour away) and they only have ones for 750's. Is that still the same one?

if you tap right on the bulge where the bendix is on the flywheel cover with a hammer it frees it up sometimes. Works with mine.

Well your bendix should not have caused the ski to just stop, that's another issue. The bendix just engages to spin the flywheel to start the motor. Since you said it died, then just clicked, then just spun freely, sounds like you have some serious issues in there. Like a grenaded bendix that somehow bound up the motor for a second (hence the click), and now does not engage at all.

That's an ok temp fix, but you need to pull it & soak that thing in automatic transmission fluid overnight. It's only a matter of time before tapping the cover will not help.

It died I think cause my idle is set really low (dont like wearing the lanyard) But I will pull it and look this weekend.

Anyone know if a 750 stater will work?

you mean bendix? If so I pretty sure just about ANY skis bendix will fit in there, for all brands, Im pretty sure they are all made by mitsubishi and are all the same part barring a few exceptions (ie Tigershark and the WR500)

Ah Bendix, that sounds like Matt_E's skis he's gone through several this year alone (he has like 5 sitting on the shelf in his garage).

I have a spare on hand if you want it, its been submerged in motor oil for the past couple weeks to prevent anything from happening to it. If you want it Ill give it to you for what I paid for it.

I'd pop off the flywheel and check out what it looks like in there. Although you cant really tell externally what condition a bendix is in, you can see if water got in there. Also, are you sure your battery was fully charged? If the cranking voltage is low and the starter doestn spin up high enough, the bendix wont engage. Also possible your starter motor brushes are wearing down and it isnt spinning up high enough, but the chances of that are very low (happened to me though)

Mine will stick some times if the ski sits for a while. I Usualy jusst give the starter and that bulge a tap and keep pressing the button. Are you supposed to grease or oil them?

I didnt think of the battery cause it was running great and turning over fast as ever before then. I'll check the battery before anything.
