1) My buddy has a stock 94 B1. Looks great on the outside, but inside? Not so much. Bone stock and it's seen better days.

He wants to get it to rip a little better and wake it up. He wants to get a pipe or maybe something more on $1500 budget. My questions is this: Does he need a new cdi if he installs a Factory B or RIVA Red Pipe?

2) A friend is selling a bunch of parts off a running, soon to be parted out B1 and was offering the following for $1600:
- 701 61x with 175psi in both cylnders (told it had a milled head), F/A, Protec dry pipe, modified cdi, TDI waterbox, protec ride plate, worx intake grate, UMI steering (no bars), used midshaft (buddy's is currently trashed), and a solas prop (not sure of pitch). Is this a good deal?

I personally like to stay close to a sock the motor it will be way more reliable just add a pipe and bump the compression up

#1 - for $1500, you can get a head, pipe, impeller and a modified CDI or MSD enhancer. But to answer your question, yes you want to change up the CDI so you do not bump against the rev limiter.

#2 That's an OK deal if it is all good shape.

On my 61x b1 I have a mod b pipe, intake grate, ada head and it runs very strong and is super reliable. Used b pipe was $475 shipped, used ada head was $180 (I think) and the intake grate was $80 used. My ign is stock. Love the set up.

I would prefer he bought the entire package because we know everything works together on the current ski. His ski is troublesome. No idea what the compression is yet. The midshaft seal is destroyed. The vulcanized ring is destroyed, so that abosultely need replacement or rebuilding. I'd hate to have him get a pipe and some other items and not get the performance he wants cause his motor is trashed. I don't think this optional set-up is too heavily modded to reduce reliablilty.

I agree that you can find everything you mentioned for roughly half the price, but two things are an issue with me. You still arent getting all of the parts he has been offered. The UMI is worth $300, The ride plate: $100, the midshaft housing and shaft: $125, CDI: $100, TDI Waterbox: $125, Solas prop: $125, and a full motor, all working for $1600.

My buddy is not hands on and if her got the parts u mentioned, he would have to pay a shop to install, so no idea how much more that adds to the price. Going with the full package gives him everything that can simply be bolted in and he can sell off his old parts to make up the cost or keep em as spares and slowly build them as replacements for later?

Either way he can't go wrong, but if it was me, I would get the whole deal knowing it works and that I don't have to worry about unexpected issues with my stock motor that has never been rebuilt for the 5 years I've owned it.
