what makes a well rounded SJ surf rider, big air or surf style

Heres a ? to all the SJ surf riders. What percentage of big air to surf style would you say is important in your riding skillz. also how about the percentage of time you spend in surf stance vs in the holds.
It seems to me the vet riders that ride surf stance tend to have alot more surf style, big reintis, huge top turns and big spray.I spend at least 60% of my time trying to learn surf stance and ripping the lip,how bout the rest of ya?

I think it depends on what coast you live on
Honestly, here on the west coast a lot of us have grown up surfing practically year round or at least been exposed to it. It is the major influence of my riding, the O-side riders, and especially the Morro Bay guys... Taylor Curtis, Luke Monson, and Jerry Brandon. Many of the old timers are strictly surf riders and their pumps never even leave the water, but they can shred a wave like no other. I really think style is everything.

Ever seen a nose stab look this sick...

90% surf stance (goofy foot)
10% locked in the holds

I only stay in the footholds when I'm doing an inverted trick... I approach the wave in surf stance and then pop my feet in the holds real quick to do the trick. Then, as soon as I land, pop back to riding surf stance... I am training myself to ride in all different types of stances. I can ride switch surf stance as well..

I think it's very important that you always try to change how you are doing things... experiment w/ different styles and ways of riding in the surf. It will only make you more rounded and give you ideas for tricks and variations...

surf stance

I ride surf stance (regular foot) 100% of the time. Have you ever tried to ride a surfboard with your feet side by side, I didn't think so, It doesn't work. For jumping, I truly don't think it helps to have holes in the side. And footstraps are safer!

I think that there are pros and cons for both... I love the surf and been surfing since I was about 7 and stopped at about 22, I got into sking to be able to do more with the surf ! I like to Air with my feet in footholds and also like to Surf waves with a regular foot stance... I like to surf ride but it is a 50/50 with throwing Airs... Its a both thing. Its all about having fun... and whatever you like more !

Sick of comments that you guys think you the shiot !:bs2:

the point of the thread is really to find out what % each rider spends with surf style vs Airs,As in how important is that to you in the freeride world. Taylor, ive seen some super sick pics of you in surf style form.I also come from a surfer background, and like pete got into sking 100% for more fun in the surf without all the paddling.surf stance or not was really more of a after thought.

I would say I ride surf stance 90% of the time with a front hold. I only ride with my feet in the holds the other 20%. Just for no handed rolls, or one handed rolls, and nose stabs. So much more sontroll in the surf stance position!

Slut,ya ever try doing the rolls or backys in surf stance under the front foothold,Im using a highroller front hold like you and have been trying rolls in surf stance, the rotatation seems to pull my foot from under it.I came out at weird angle last time and hit my helmet on the water sideways,It still feeels like my head was ripped off.

I know all the west coasters riding surf stance are using a front strap, and throwing inverted tricks easly.thinking on switching to that, but I change the angle of my front foot alot,th
is would slow me up with that.

I ride goofy all the time looking for the steepest part of the wave & staying there. Tried holds but they only worked to tuck my toes into. Tried straps both front & back with limited success but too much sacrifice in mobility & the front strap would lock my leg against the side of the tray when I'd fall on the right angle & almost broke my leg. I now have the highroller front hold & like it alot. :headbang:

I ride the nose of my longboard like that alot:biggthumpup:

I agree with where your comming from. IMO you don't have good weight transfer or fluid motion with your feet in the back. I see better ridding style from more bouy carvers than freeriders.
