I hate to do this. Until now everyone I have dealt with on the x had been honest and fair. I guess it lulled me into being too trusting. I have EVERY pm and text that went back and forth between us but will try to condense this as best as I can.
superjet0587 listed a big bore motor for sale for $750 plus shipping. Sounded like a great price so I messaged him about it and when I asked about the condition of the motor and if it had any issues I was told "marc ericson built in 2008 before he was too messed up could use some fixing up but it runs and ran all year without issue may need to install some heli coils in cases". I was then texted some pictures on my cellphone that show the motor with the head off. I couldn't really see anything because I have a crappy flip phone but it looked like any other motor without melted pistons.
I saw that lots of people knew superjet0587(Chad) from the responses on his for sale post and learned that he won ameteur class at national's in 2008 with this motor. I pm'd Shonuff since he was one of those who posted on the thread and asked if he would buy from superjet0587 and he said he was a good kid with a good dad and he would buy fom him. He met them at nationals in 2008. I figured that was good enough for me and trusted him. I mailed him a check for $825 to put $75 towards shipping with the understanding that any thing left over from the $75 for shipping would be refunded.
I then get some more pictures texted to me on my phone that show a seized bolt without a head stuck in the exhaust manifold area of the cylinder with a message from superjet0587 saying that he couldn't get it out and he would refund my money if I wanted him too. I told him to go ahead and send it and I would deal with it.
I get the motor and immediately start taking it apart to check it out.
The cylinders have deep grooves above the exhaust ports. Definitely needs a bore.
The woodruff key area on the crank is ripped almost completely out. Could it be used? Maybe, but why would I want to risk a new top end that I have to put in it on a f'd up crank that could shear loose at anytime and throw my timing off?
A chunk of epoxy is missing from the inside of the cases.(He couldn't have seen this so it's really irrevelant but still sucks)
On top of that there is no check for the shipping difference. I had shipped my motor to Texas in a plastic bin with plywood in it for $50 so I knew it didn't cost $75.
At this point I think that I will ask him if I can return it if I eat all the shipping charges. I thought it was generous of me to offer this since he obviously saw these defects and never bothered to mention them. I honestly believed that he would do it since he offered a refund before he shipped it over the seized, broken bolt.
His reply to my request was that: "I was a whiner. That's what you get when you buy used stuff. He sold it to me for cheap so I should get over it. If I had specifically asked about the problems he would have told me but too bad I didn't ask. It isn't buy and try."
I told him my biggest problem was that he purposely did not mention the damaged crank and that it needed boring. How is buying it and opening a box buying and trying? Why is a refund an option before shipping but not after?
I am not upset with Shonuff in any way whatsoever. He just told me his opinion of someone he met one time.
I don't expect I will get anything from this. I just want anyone else who deals with superjet0587 to be warned that apparantly if he sells you something used for a good price, you should expect that it is total crap and not whine if he doesn't tell you about any known defects it has.
