Ok guys, i have been back and forth to many times with this dilemma. What engine should i build?

I have many choices to pick from but can't decide. I know sometimes you have to give up somethings to get another so it has made me think alot.

As of right now i have both 61x 701's and 800 powervalve motors i can use.
I need to weigh to PROS & CONS of both and hear other experences from you guys.
I have been told by Yamanube that his 800pv hit harder then any other motor he rode including some strokers and that you can't feel the extra weight because of the power. If i go with a 701, most likely it will be a 61x because i have tons of them and i run single carbs.

I would like a fairly Reliable ski that has the capability to do flat water backflips in a lightweight fx-1 hull im working on getting, so i realize the 701 may not be my best choice.

I do not want a STROKER

PV800 PROS

120Hp stock
Reliable

PV800 CONS

Around 30lbs Heavier
Either have to buy or Fab conversion kit (around $2000+ Depending on time invested)
Dual carbs (I prefer single setups)

61x 701 PRO's

Cheap to build
Lightweight
Doesn't need conversion stuff
Easy to Modify
Single Carb so im not stuck on shore tuning like friends. LOL

61x 701 CONS

Can be unreliable when highly modified IMO

Please if anyone has had experence with the 800pv please chime in. I know everyone's opinions will vary on engines but would like some insight. I have a friend that can do all the engine work like Porting and Boring. He is really cheap and Awesome at it. I do not want to send my engine out to a builder, i would rather keep it local with my friend.
I will add Pro's and Con's to my list if you have any.

The only con i don't agree with is that 61x is unreliable if heavily modded. Done right the 61x is a very powerfull and reliable engine plus, like you said, parts are cheap and plentiful.

If you want to do most of your building in house, i'd say stick with the 61x platform. The PV800 option is nice if you get the engine cheap enough but all the parts to install it and the pipe can be hard to find and pricey for that same reason. Yamanubes did sound very nice on the water though. :bigok:

The one con that would make the 66E out of the question for me is the reliance on WDK for parts.

I'd stick with a 701 platform myself. If done right, a highly modified 701 platform is not unreliable.

i switched from ported 61x cases w/ a 46sbn taperbored to ported/ramped/epoxied 62t cases with xscream modded dual 38s and i can say there was a big difference in power! the single bigger carb had more of higher rpm power band. with these duals there is alot more throttle response off idle and it uses alot less fuel. i used to be anti duals too unti art and chucky both talked me into it. i tuned these carbs in head high surf even and it was super easy. i say give the t cases a shot. maybe your buddy was just off on jetting?

Ya i have started to think that, i never had any issues with my modded 701. But had heard from so many and saw so many friends broke down on the beach because of theres. LOL

It had never crossed my mind to get parts from WDK, i was looking for parts that were already made or someone was going to build that i trusted.
I have thought about getting some Bigbore sleeves from NW sleeves and going that route since they have the same port heights as the 61x and i think max bore is 88mm.

Keep the opinions coming, Thanks

LOL, i will try anything once.. I have some dual 38's and dual 44's sitn in the garage, i have thought about sending off to get some work done on them. The last set of duals i ran were a Nightmare to tune, when tuned right they hit great. But never stayed in tune and pissed me off so much i switched to singles for years.

I think it's more accurate to say that poorly modded 701 platforms are unreliable.
The degree of modification has far less impact on reliability than the expertise of the motor builder.

If you send them off to get work done, the performer of said work (and presumed recipient of your hard-earned money) should be able to tell you what jetting to run on your setup, eliminating any guess work by yourself.

good luck. someone on the board tried that and the adapter plate had to be super thick to make the transitions less abrupt, give it a try though, 800 power would be sweet

Just send your 62t cases my way and I will build it up just like mine is going to be......... but I dont work CHEAP!
I never really had trouble with my well modded 61x. Heck I might have it up for sale after I get my 62t built or I just might try to mount it in the 550sx hull.
I would stay away from the pv800 in the fx hull. If you try to put it in, you wont be riding this coming summer, you'll be trying to fab everything up since your such a procrastinator.

Thanks for the support Jim.. LOL

I am sure one way or another i will have my ski built back up by summer.
You won't have time to build my motor this winter, you will have my Scooter to build and restore soon.

Oh, and i want a Flatwater freestyle motor, one that i don't need a 10 foot boat wake at LOTO to roll. LMFAO

Idk? Too much power for Cory I think, that's the only logical reason I can think of. As long as it's built right, shouldn't have any issues.
