topic says it all, what and why? Im going to be building a 61x/61x motor this winter, freestyle ported jug stock bottom end with 6m6 crank stock 44mm carb, hopefully b pipe or something close, and dont really know what to do on the head, stocker milled, aftermarket if so what brand, there are so many and want something reasonable price and the max psi that is still very safe, 150-180???

Stock reeds will be fine right?

Can I reuse crank seals or should I get new, they're from a 93 650

obviusly full new gasket set

How about wrist pins, bearings, cir clips, can I reuse?

The pistons are used pro x, .75 overbore

Please give any other engine build info that I may need or links to other sites on tips on what to do and what not to do.

Ive helped build two 550 piston ports and did a 650 kawi but it was half ass and didnt care as much as I will with my own ski. THANKS

a girdled headhas long studs that go all the way into the engine case, and sandwich the cylinder on when the head is tightened down.

61x are bad to crack, run a girdled head for sure. they arent cheap though, $300 or so new I think.

full gasket kit will include crank seals, replace them.
probably wouldnt hurt to have some one look over your crank as well, you would hate to spend all that and have the crank go and ruin alot of parts.

piston pins and bearings... tough call.
they ae erlatively cheap... but also, they should have relatively low wear.

fo sure though, replace the circlips that hold the pins in the pistons.

and if the rings have been removed from the pistons, they probably should be replaced too.

A Girdled head is a aftermarket head that has studs that reach from the head to the crank case. When tightened it sandwhiches the cyclinder with the case and head and makes the entire engine move as one which cuts down on any loose parts rattling and causing cracks(90% in cyclinders)

I'd recomend it if your getting an aftermarket head! They are pricey but worth it. I'd recomend
Lehr Performance Watercraft
. Paul can also help you with the rest of your build.

Suggestion....I would get a pipe before worrying about porting. I'm not 100% sure, but without a pipe you wont be getting the full use of your porting.

the cyl is already ported btw. I have all winter to look for parts but wanted to get the main internals outta the way.

Can any machine shop check a crank or do I need to send it somewhere. the 650 its in right now runs very strong.

Do you recommend any company or shop to get gasket kits and other hardware from, preferably a sponsor or someone from this site??

Jetworks will have all the parts you're looking for and they have awesome customer service as well. They also sell the ADA girdled head kit cheaper than almost anyone.

lehr performance watercraft.

there are other site sponsors as well, that have decent deals.

the crank might run fine, but there could be a few things wrong with it.
maybe keep it for a spare and buy a new crank?

I assume ( like most of us) your budget is tight, new crank is right under $400, getting yours checked is $65 I think - quote from Protec years ago-

if it spins smooth, no bearing noise, no blueing of the rods, and acceptable thrust washer play in the rods, you could probably be pretty confident in it.

start the hunt for a bargain girdle head ( used) , they are out there.

Definately look over your crank really good. My Square is down now because the rod ends looked "good enough" during assembly, but with a little detonation while tuning, the end bearings were ate up. Luckily the cases and top end were untouched, just found a few shavings here and there. I'm getting a new crank for the rebuild. Good luck with your build! btw no need for a wetsuit down here yet! ha ha

i have a pro tec pipe on my ski. i want to upgrade to a ada head.

on a stock set up there is only one bolt that attatches to the head.

would i really hurt any thing if i didn't attatch the pipe to the top of the head.

only one bolt would line up and the only way to get both to line up would be to go with a pro tec head which im not too crazy about.

You really need to get at least one lord mount bolt on the head. That pipe is known for cracking already, and it would be under greater stress w/o the support from the head.
Edit: I think ADA makes a bracket to go with their head to run a high-mount exhaust.

Daup, The cheapest route would to be get a 61x top case & intake, and a 701cc cyl (61x or 62t),head & pistons, and use everything else from your 650.

ADA Head would be a good choice, check with Paul (LPW), I think he has some old Jr Magoo logo'd ADA heads he would make you a good deal on.

kahuna, do you also mean an ada girdled head? How are other brands like Westcoast R&D Riva, etc I know they are regular head but I see those alot too. btw with a girdled kit, I see there are studs that go down outside of the jug which makes sense to sandwich it in but were do the studs go into on the case, is there a plate that surrounds that has threaded holes??

no, the studs replace the cylinder to case bolts......... taht is where the sandwich comes into play............ Westcoast no longer makes heads.......

Riva, Protec and R&D are about all that is left out there......

yes, I was referring to ADA Girdled heads.
