are the fuel lines hooked up correctly? Is there a clog in the fuel line. If it started with starter fluid, its not getting gas. bow out the lines and check the hook up.

but he said it wont start on starter fluid now, i'd guess really low compression.

totally different but i had a 4wheeler that stuck the compression rings, it would start on starter fluid sometimes and sometimes not, tested the comp, was around 85psi.

easy on the starter fluid too, its not so good for the 2strokes since it goes to your crank first.

Only use starter fluid as a last resort, IMO.

If it's got compression, gas, and spark she'll run. What's your compression?

Ive been helping him with this. the fuel lines are the originals and deteriorating so we are going to replace them. it also does not have an oil block off so he is not using a premixed gas. we plan on blocking the oil injection so we can use an accurate premix. as for compression, neither of us have a gauge but we should be able to get one soon. when it did start it ran strong for a good 20-30 seconds before he killed it.

Use a 50:1 premix in a squirt bottle to prime with fuel.
One way to check to see if the carb is getting supply of fuel, turn idle screw until the throttle plate closes all the way, then with the air cleaner assembly off, put your hand over the top of the carb and seal it off from air, give it a quick crank (don't touch the throttle) then look down in the carb and see if you have a puddle of fuel on top of the throttle plate. This will tell you if the carb is supplying fuel.

i checked compression-120 in both cylinders, replaced all the fuel lines, checked the fuel pump - looks clean, ski still won't start... any more ideas?
