The main reason for extended rails on a SJ is for extra buoyancy.
Sure it can help for tricks like riding backward with your feet on the rails standing up, but that is about the only one I can think of, and you dont really need "extended" rails to do that trick, just one layer of turf for traction purposes IMO.
Its really a way to make a SJ more wider and stable like a wider ski(ie, Octane, SX-R, EME, etc.) but without all the extra composites and weight. Lenzi runs extra, extra wide rails. It almost looks silly if you didnt know WTF was going on. Its all about flatwater freestyle, not needed for surf or pretty much anything else. Of course unless you want to play bumper boats!!:icon16:
I believe Derrick Jr. about the ripped down 2x4 story. I can see someone doing this, then turfing over it. You could go about 1" thick, and it would bend with the shape of the ski.
