what would you do...

Would you rather buy a newer stock SJ in good condition and pick and choose your mods, or would you rather find a good used ski already modded?

Let's set a price limit of around $4,000

I would buy an older roundnose for up to 2000 bucks, and then put more mods on it.
On the other hand, if you can find a modded one from someone you trust, that's the way to go.
You can find nice modded ones for 4000 or less. Mudphish had a NICE SJ last year, for 3500.
Deals are to be had, and you can't go wrong either way, as long as you ensure the previous owner took care of his equipment and knew what he was doing.

EDIT: I think that the overall value is better when you buy an already modded out ski. It's definetely cheaper than modding it yourself - if that's what you're after.

yeah.. i'm not sure how to go. i know i'll want mods and would have to keep a newer one stock for the first season which would probably kill me. but i do like the black hull a lot...

I bought a brand new 05 for 6k at the end of the season thinking I'd keep it stock for a good year to maintain the warranty. Then I learned about surf riding . I have since sank an embarassing amount more $$ into it in just the past four months. Oh and that nice black paint job you speak of? It's completely shot. I'd suggest a used ski. Take my mistakes for what they're worth :grumble:

that's my problem... just about all of the skis i've ever had always end up with mods even before they hit the water. i don't think i'd be able to live with a stock sj without puttin on a pipe and prop at the least. but i also like to choose my mods so i know what goes into it.

Ok, this should lay it out.

Round nose $2K if you can find one, then.....

Porting $250+
b-pipe $350+ (used)
13/17 prop $250+
hood $800+
Pole $650+
intake grate $200+
UMI Steering $225+ (new plate also)
footholds $125+
Turf $50+

Um, that is damn near $3K worth of mods, assuming you get a used b-pipe!:27:

Then we will factor in your time...

To offer a bit of advice of my own - deals are to be had. Here's a list of my personal stuff.

2001 Round nose $800 (Not a typo)

Porting $100 (Did it myself, great results)
Pistons $200
ADA Head $350
b-pipe $450
13/16 prop $200
hood $325
Pole $400
Chinpad $145
Bracket $125
Misc hardware $200
UMI Steering $80 (includes short plate)
footholds $150+
Turf $125
MSD Digital TL $375
VForce Reeds $150
Carbs, manifold $300
Throttle, bars $70

Total $4545
Total of parts I sold of this ski:

Stock ignition $150
Pole, pad, pistons $130
Stock reeds $20
Carbs $125
Misc stuff $300
Total $825

Total for the ski = $3820
And I would say I have a bitchin' Superjet.

Mandatory Edit: This post is for educational purposes only. It does in no way relate to the true, and much lower cost, of my parts.

Damn. Why did I just do that? I think I was happier not knowing how much everything cost. :17: :17: :17: :17: :17:

Still, there you have it...it can be done.
However, when Mudphish was selling his ski, it was a turn-key boat with at least equal performance and parts. It sold for 3500.

Yeah, I can think of something, sure.

How about I give you a kit of foam? Or some resin?
Or how about a free port job?

you get the best deal if you buy one modded. you may need to rebuild a little sooner but at least your not sinking all that money in at once.
