What type of resin do I need.

I've read about the 2 different type of epoxies and how 1 boat uses 1 type and another boat uses the other type. It confused the crap outta me.

My 1992 Seadoo XP broke free from it's moorings last time out during the night when it decided to get extremely windy. Luckily, it went straight to the beach. Unluckily the rocks rubbed paint off a few spots. Now we got expensive anchors and I'm going to get a chain so it doesn't happen again.

I didn't see any exposed fibers, but I'd feel much more comfortable riding it this summer if I put a layer of resin on the spots that got rubbed.

What type of resin/epoxy do I need?

I read about someone using BONDO epoxy from Home Depot. Would this work for me?

Thanx for all replies!

yeah.... sounds like you dont need epoxy resin... sounds like you want gel coat repair kit like Matt says... maybe a sharpie? or autozone touchup paint... unless its a really nice paint job... then I guess I would try the gel coat repair kit... but I dont even know how great of a job that does... never tried it..

don't use Bondo on the hull bottom, the water will chip it off. As mentioned, either epoxy and roll on paint (to seal any fiber) or the easier, probably better decision, Get a gel coat repair kit. I'm not sure if the 92 Seadoos used gel coat or just paint (like the yamaha SMC hull bottoms) but either way, you cant go wrong. IMO, puts some pictures up, and its probably not a big deal. Does it flex more in that spot? If so, the fibers are broken, and the best thing to do is epoxy some thick fiberglass inside, on the other side (speaking of which, look at the inside where the damage is on the outside, and see if its lumpy or has pinholes or scrapes from barnacles and such.)

I always thought gelcoat and paint was there to protect the fiberglass.

I hate the idea of protection of any type missing between me and the water.

I'm a firm believer in Murphy and his/her laws.

i got no paint left on the bottom of my ski and its just fine.
slides on sand every time i ride at least twice..

its super rare to even see a ski thats got pristine paint on the bottom, especially something as old as a 92! wow!

Stan, keep in mind that SJ's have an SMC bottom deck, which is impervious to delamination.
AFAIK, Seadoos have laminated Glass hulls. Exposed glass can lead to delamination, especially on the bottom.
It should get fixed, with gelcoat.

Here's the pics of all the damage the storm did. :crutches:

It doesn't look as bad as I thought.

I'm only worried about the crap on bottom. As far as I can tell it didn't cut into the fiberglass at all.

Any opinions on the damage is welcome. :veryhappy:

Wanna do mine? :smokin:

Do you remember how much you bought for the GTI repair? (4 oz?) Or, better yet, do you remember the product you used for the job?
